The universal love for sungold is well known and imo extremely well deserved. I had a bumper crop of these magical morsels this year, and while my other tomatoes also did really well, Sungolds remained my favourite.
That being said I love a good slicer – tomato sandwiches are one of my all time loves. And while I've definitely done the dance of slicing a million little orbs to put into a sandwich, it got me questioning…
…Is there any full size tomato equivalent to Sungolds?
I know lots of other cherry varieties give them a run for their money, but I'm curious if anyone has a hybrid or heirloom variety that produces bigger fruit that packs the same juicy, sweet tangy flavour punch that these guys do.
My future self thanks you profusely.

I’m growing sun golds cherry tomatoes as well as a larger tomato, jaune flamme. It’s supposed to be a 4oz tomato but mine have not been quite that large due to growing them in a black pot (and water issues) rather than in my raised bed. They are not as sweet as they are supposed to be but I think it’s because they are not as large as they should be. They are worth trying again and I’ll plant them in my raised bed next year. You may want to consider them.
Pro tip for quickly slicing sungolds, take two “soup container” plastic lids, tops facing each other, fill it with Sungolds, then slice them all at once horizontally. Makes it a very quick process!

I don’t personally eat raw tomato, but I grow quite a lot & have been doing so for years.
By FAR the best-liked yellow/gold slicer I’ve ever grown has been Momotaro Gold. I can’t speak to whether or not the “flavor notes” are similar to SunGold….all I can say is that it’s sweet in the way that most lighter-than-red/pink tomatoes are, and an excellent variety overall. Seeds are pricey, though.
For something very sweet and “fruity” flavored, any of the popular large-fruited yellow/gold/orange/bicolor/striped varieries would be worth a try. Most of my family doesn’t much care them, and as a general category they tend not to perform well for me (so I rarely grow many of them) but based on the opinions of people I give plants or tomatoes to….Aunt Gerties Gold, Hillbilly PL, Pineapple & Hawaiian Pineapple, Chef’s Choice Orange, and KBX are good ones (the latter two I actually consider worth growing on a regular basis).
Pineapple and Pineapple Plus are likely the closest in flavor to the Sungold. Unfortunately, being a large slicer they take almost 100 days to mature.
An important aspect to Sungold is its beta-carotene genetics.
Jaune Flamme is genetically related to Sungold. It’s cocktail sized.
A much larger beta-carotene tomato with Sungold genetics is Golden Buddha.
If you like orange ones, Amana Orange is a good one to go with. (I think that’s how you spell it? I’ve only heard my mom say the name.)
[Lemonita ](https://www.thompson-morgan.com/p/tomato-lemonita-f1-seeds/wkf2513TM)are quite nice but didn’t produce that well for me
Not quite Sungold-level sweetness, but I really enjoyed Dad’s Sunset. Grew it for the first time this year.

Im growing Amish Golds which are a cross between Sungold and Amish Paste. Shape, size and meatiness of a paste tomato but flavor more like a sungold. Mine arent quite as tart/acidic as a sungold but very similar otherwise. Im really enjoying them. Bought them for sauce but I eat them raw too.
Kelloggs Breakfast has entered the chat….
Not as sweet as Sungold, but I guarantee you will not regret growing them. My favorite tomato of all time.
Not as sweet, but I really enjoyed Carolina Gold this year.
I like ‘Sunrise Sauce’ tomatoes (from Johnny’s). Nice and sweet, but since they are for sauce, they are a little dry. The sauce is amazing, though, and so easy!
Kellogg’s breakfast. They are actually an orange tomato and deeper in color than a yellow tomato like a sungold. Kbreaks are also healthier vigorous plants and regularly produce tomatoes 2+ pounds over the entire season. They’re on the list of tomatoes I will always grow and have a fruity flavor profile.
Has anyone tried Sungella? That’s supposed to be a plum-sized dehybrization of Sungold.
I grew Jaune Flamme this year and the flavor is delicious (sweet/tart, fruity, very juicy). Also plum-sized, so I’d for sure recommend that one, too.
Yellow brandywine?
Aww…i got interested in gardening this past May and only found out about this variety recently. I can’t wait to grow these next year.
Another Staub lover I see. 😊
One that is a yellow beefsteak that is delicious is AAS Winner Tomato Chef’s Choice Yellow. Check it out at [https://all-americaselections.org/product/tomato-chefs-choice-yellow/](https://all-americaselections.org/product/tomato-chefs-choice-yellow/)
Momotaro gold! 🧡
We grew a few *Sun Orange* plants as a custom order for a customer.
She has asked us to do it again next season. She prefers them over SG because they don’t split.
