Garden enthusiasts seeking a verdant, thriving lawn come springtime are being advised to complete one crucial task immediately before winter arrives.
Whilst numerous gardeners begin winding down their seasonal activities, lawn maintenance specialists insist this period represents one of the most vital times to take action. With temperatures beginning to drop and increased rainfall anticipated, grass areas should now be entering a crucial recovery and preparation stage.
The autumn season presents ideal conditions for addressing summer heat damage, strengthening turf for winter conditions, and establishing foundations for robust, thick grass growth in spring.
One specialist reveals that achieving a genuinely luxuriant lawn depends on a single essential gardening task, executed with precise methodology to guarantee uniform outcomes, reports the Express.
Jonathan Davis, turf specialist at Lawnsmith, stressed the significance of autumn nourishment, stating: “Feeding your lawn correctly can help strengthen it for the colder months ahead and set a solid foundation for the spring.
“Fertiliser prepares your lawn for the challenges of winter. It strengthens the grassroots, making it more resistant to frost and potential diseases.”
Applying a gradual-release fertiliser during this period not only develops winter resilience but also promotes vigorous development when warmer weather returns.
“A slow-release feed will also encourage denser and healthier growth by the time the warmer months roll around,” said Jonathan.
For those planning to sow new grass seed this month — whether it’s for patching up bare spots or establishing a completely new lawn — fertiliser is equally crucial.
“A fertiliser will support growth but you need a balanced feed. For newly sown or overseeded lawns, use a feed that is high in phosphorus to support root development,” Jonathan recommended.
When it comes to established lawns, the formula changes slightly, with Jonathan suggesting: “A low nitrogen, high potassium fertiliser strengthens the roots while avoiding excessive top growth.”

To further enhance resilience during the damp, chilly months, iron supplements can “improve the grass colour and toughen its defences against fungal diseases and moss during damp months. Phosphate should also be in the mix to support root development.”
However, regardless of how high-quality your fertiliser is, uneven application can negate the benefits. That’s why Jonathan advised: “You could visually break your lawn down into a checkerboard, using items to mark it out if you need to. Start spreading fertiliser evenly as you move in one direction from one side of your lawn to the other.”
Once one direction is complete, reverse your path. Then change direction, and so on.
Jonathan concluded: “This checkerboard method helps guarantee every inch of lawn gets a balanced dose, without risking patches of overfeeding or neglect. As you’ll revisit areas, avoid using too much feed at once as you don’t want to over-fertilise.”
“You should apply your autumn feed early enough for it to have an effect before the first frost arrives,” cautioned the expert.
