Growing in my front yard, i noticed a sweet smell and there was these little black berries all over the ground and on this tree. Found in NC if anyone was wondering!
Ooo, those look like muscadines! If they are, there’ll be a green pulp and several chunky seeds inside.
They grow wild around the southeast. There’s a vine from the neighbor’s yard that goes up into the canopy in my backyard that drops a bunch of them this time of year, and there are a bunch of new, small vines popping up all around the back fence.
If that’s *for sure* what they are, they’re edible. They have a really complex and interesting flavor profile, too, with a chewy/sour rind and the sweeter, gooey pulp inside.

They look like muscadine. Good eating! Great for jelly. Freeze them if you want a cool treat!
