Hiya! Hoping for some guidance on pruning new growth on my recently acquired Brachychiton Rupestris! When I got it home I pruned off around 8 leaves and over the next two weeks it’s pushed out 30 leaves!!! 9 of these leaves are on 3 new branches. The thing is I don’t particularly want branches growing this low on the plant.

Can I safely prune these branches off, down to the trunk while they are growing or should I wait until they are more established?

Thanks!

I do not know about this species specifically, but pruning earlier is better so the plant wastes less energy investing into creating branches.

Earlier the better. You can also take a clean razor blade and split the apical bud into sections to encourage more bushiness at the top.

I have one at a similar size. I chopped the top. Best decision I ever made. It immediately put out two large, fast-growing new branches in its place.

Thanks yall! I snipped the branches! Fingers crossed it branches again when it’s 6ft tall:)

These are native to my area, and just an FYI, it won’t do well indoors long term. They *need* full, direct sunlight and ample airflow. I wouldn’t keep it in a cache pot either.
