A seven-year-old took top honours at the Niton and Whitwell Horticultural Society Summer Show at Niton Village Hall, on Saturday.
There were more than 300 entries, with other classes including cookery, handicraft and photography for the show which has been going since 1866.
The trophies were shared between 12 exhibitors, some seasoned faces and others new to the show, spanning nine decades – an event for all ages to pursue excellence.
One of the younger exhibitors was overjoyed with his success and his story is inspiring – Finley Newbery, seven, a pupil at Niton School, loves nothing better than to spend time on the family allotment with his great-grandad, Peter Staples.
Peter was a judge at Niton Show many years ago and it was lovely to welcome him back and he was clearly delighted to have encouraged the youngster to enter the show.
The success of his exhibits earned Finley the Jack and Joan Ellis Cup, which is awarded to the child who earns most points in the adult classes. In doing so, he also beat all-comers with his runner beans, winning the Fred Thorne salver.
Prize list: Trophies for fruit exhibits and vegetable classes: Lucy Dabell, Sam Twining, James Kingswell, Finley Newbery and Gaye Rolfe. Trophies for flowering plants: James Kingswell, Viv Langford, Sam Twining and Liz Prior. Trophy for most points in cookery classes, Lucy Dabell.
Trophies for handicraft, Rose Burnett and Di Turner whilst Steve Newberry took the trophy for most points in photographic classes. Jesse Skeldon-Downer won the children’s trophy whilst Finley also was awarded the Niton School Cup.
The family earning most points across the generations was the Critchison family with entries from Rob Whittington, Eric, Claire, Alice and Leah Critchison.
The society’s next show will be held on March 28, 2026, anyone, young or old, can get in touch via nitonwhitwellhortsociety@gmail.com
