I’m trying to propagate this plant, though I’m not even sure if it’s possible. I accidentally broke off the leaf, so I thought I’d try putting it in water to see if it would grow roots—but so far, nothing’s happening. The brown color is probably from the cinnamon I applied for 24 hours before placing it in water

In my experience, it can take 6+ months to root a sansi prop. I’d make sure it’s getting lots of light and be patient!
Are you sure the brown part is because cinnamon? It looks kinda rot, touching it, if it feels mushy it’s rot then you have to cut above the damage and start again.
I just popped in water, no cinnamon (?) or whatever. Change the water every once in a while. It takes a long time, but the roots do come.
Mine took around six months to root.
Ok i have started again cos the brown thing wasn’t cinnamon 🫣

Mine took forever too
I propagate snake plants this way all the time. It takes a long, long time, but works very well. Keep in sunlight, change water often & clean jar if it gets algae. No need for cinnamon. Also, when changing the water, gently use your finger to clean the bottom of cutting. It gets slimy. I have propagated at least 20 plants this way. You’ll notice roots (strong white roots) in about 4-6 wks. Be patient. Let them get long & at least 4 across, if possible. When you plant, you’ll notice pups grow up from in front of or behind that leaf. I wait a few months until pups are getting big- dig up, separate & plant those elsewhere. That leaf will continue to produce pups for a long time as long as you treat it well. Best of luck!
I’ve had excellent success with snakes in water with perlite. Make sure you let it callous before you add it to water
this is a variegated snake plant. if you attempt to propagate these variegated snake plants by doing leaf cuttings, they will most likely revert to being an all green plant. If you want more variegated snake plants, you will be better off to divide the original plant than to attempt to propagate it by leaf cuttings.
That will work, so does sticking it in some soil.
Cut that rotting oart again. Air dry it for a while. Then you can out it back. It’ll at least prevent it from getting mushy again.
Personally, I don’t like propagating this in water. I had better chances of rooting it on a moist, soilless mix (cocopeat, rice hull, pumice mix).
Placing in water it will rot , l let dry out few days , then place in pot mix , cut it up & u will get even more babies 😉👍
I’ve propagated many snake plants so I’m gonna give you some sound advice. First, since you’ve trimmed it again remove that leaf from the water and give it a week to callus it will rot if you don’t. Second don’t propagate snake plant in water it can work but there’s a better chance it will just rot. When it’s callused, plant it into some potting soil, water it every few days(not everyday) and in a month a two it will start growing roots and pups.
You can let them dry a long, long time, no rush, when it starts to shrivel, you can even then propagate them in water. But I also thought that if you try and propagate a Variegated snake plant, it reverts to its original form. I was just wondering because I have had no luck trying this from a Variegated version
With this propagation period should we ever rinse the container and change the water? Or, add water when it gets low?
I’ve begun to see little roots popping out! I’m excited 😊
With the curry branch I got I rinsed and changed the water, now it doesn’t look as green. So frustrating, I’m afraid it’s dying, I’m keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 🙏🏽
Any suggestions anyone?
In my opinion water propping is pretty unnecessary step when propping *D. trifasciata*. Just push it into soil and it’ll root.
Also, you might already know this but; this kind of variegated snake plant don’t produce growth identical to og plant but resulting offspring will be green one.
Add a pothos prop in too, it releases rooting hormone
First first… that brown doesn’t look good. I’d cut it and let it callous over and try again. No cinnamon.
1) snake plants take many weeks to get baby roots. 6-8 maybe more.
2) this plant can be propagated by monkeys. Literally break it off.. let it dry a day or two.. stick it in dirt. Voila! No water propping or cinnamon needed.
3) remember a month later that you stuck a leaf in dirt… give it water … go back to your daily routine and forget about it again. Convince yourself it is gonna die and throw it in the back room… it’ll still grow. (Really it does like light but thrives on neglect)
My experience… I had a long leaf I rescued from my old job. Stuck it in a cup of water because I didn’t know what else to do. That was over a year ago. Sadly it’s still in that same cup. It has a baby too lol. I just keep about 2” tap water in it. The baby is prob 10” tall now lol. The mama leaf was over 2 feet! 🤷🏻♀️ I didn’t know what to do at the time. So since it seems happy for now and I’ve been clearly lazy… it sits.
My advice.. if it doesn’t seem like it’s rotting, give it at least 10 weeks. If still no roots, give it a fresh cut… let it callous over for a day or two… then stick it in water if you want to wait for roots or stick it in dirt right away. Give it about a tablespoon of water once a week. May need to prop it up. As it grows, more water at a time but less often.
As long as the leaf feels firm and smooth it is just fine. Don’t worry about under watering unless it feels thin and wilty.
You can do it!
