Hello, wonderful community I have never owned a Philodendron, and my question is: I was told Philodendron Florida Ghost x Tortum rare and would you pay $500 and up for it?

That’s just a Florida Ghost. They are attempting to scam you.

No, I wouldn’t pay more than $50 for a stellar specimen. It may also depend where in the world you are.

I absolutely would not. I wouldn’t pay more than $50 and even that is pushing it. I do the houseplant buying for a garden store in my city and I get these in and sell them for $35-$45 for a 6 inch pot depending on the what the wholesale price was.

I’ve seen Florida Beauty x Tortum but not Florida Ghost x Tortum. What does the mature plant look like? I see OrchidBox has pre-order available but they only show immature specimens. They have a good reputation though.

This is a Florida ghost. No relation to a tortum. Florida Ghosts are semi rare but on the rise for becoming more available widespread. Would ***not*** pay that much for this, $50 at most

I just purchased mine on Walmart.com for $28.03.

This is a regular Florida beauty ghost. Definitely not rare.

….that is….not a cross that’s on the market. Someone has tried to scam you, or has been scammed themselves lmfao. 500$ is actually insane 🙁

I’m sorry op, that is not a ‘ rare’ plant. Likely is just a Florida Ghost, which is itself a cross between Philodendron Pedatum + Squamiferum.  Florida ghosts + other philos with interestingly shapes leaves are becoming a LOT more popular now because of the availability of individuals grown from tissue culture. I would pay ~20-40$ for a well-established Florida Ghost specimen… Tortum are also becoming increasingly easy to get now,  speciality nursery near me is selling tissue-culture plants with +7 leaves and minimal damage for $25….

Always take a look on etsy and gauge market rate for so called rare plants

Heck no!! Especially because it could hypothetically get relentless thrips/spider mites at any time and just die within the first year of having it. $500 down the drain!

“My supplier woukd never do that”

This was sarcasm, right? I find it odd that someone who likes plants enough to have a supplier has never owed a philodendron. Aren’t heart leaf philos the gateway drug of the plant world?

Looks like a Florida Ghost. Not rare.

It is a Florida Ghost. You can buy them for around $25-30 these days. Although I have seen philos before that are rare with small leaves like that which change. Does the seller have an example of a fully grown mature plant? I’m guessing this is just a regular floor to ghost but just to be sure see if they have a mature one.
