Obviously not on the same level, as I can't imagine your housebroken monstera ever took a dump in the middle of the room when your roommate brought a date full of red flags home, but do your plants ever provide you with stories? IE, did your wilty fern suddenly perk up when you finally dumped that shitty guy or started listening to Fall Out Boy on speakers, or does your rose start looking brighter when you cook curry often?

I have curiosity.

Pic of this… plant who's type I forget that I got for 5 bucks as it was turning brown and dying. Nursed it back to life and co-planted with green onion (I stg anything you co-plant with green onion flourishes) and some type of Vining flower. Also a re-sprouting lettuce stump in the crochet jar

    That is a birkin.

I have some stories for mine, but they tend to be boring. I guess it’s more like I know my history with the plant. I especially treasure the plants that have been with me through difficult times, especially if I neglected them during those times. Some of my favorites are fairly unremarkable/common varieties that have simply been with me a while. One is a 50+ year old San Pedro I got from a neighbor who was heartbroken to rehome it after having it that long – I’m honored she trusted me to become its new caretaker.

I have a ZZ that’s an asshole. When I got it, it was full & super tall. Within 2 weeks it was wilting & dying, after a year or so it wouldnt get better so I decided “fuck you, die then you dumb plant!” & I put it in a corner to die a slow death.

When it finally kicked the bucket, I decided to reuse its pot & amend the soil… found 4 massive tubers that looked super healthy. So now that zz is back with the rest of my plants, growing & flourishing. But it knows it’s on thin fucking ice.

Yes. How I acquired them usually is the story but sometimes there’s more

Our first pothos wilted when its sister, an English Ivy, died from the heat of our apartment. They perked back up after three months, only to go into fatal shock a few years later after repotting.

We also have two young pothos who are both in a growth spurt and are competing for who can grow the longest stem.

If the origin story. I have a few that came from a little terrarium that my son and I made when he was very young. He’s 19 now and I still have those plants and/or descendants. A spider plant that I got from a spiderling I snagged on a walk years ago. A little succulent I gave my GF years ago when I was courting her.

Most of them I’ve found in the trash… I also found my dog in the trash…

Yes, but not all of my plants. One of my plants was propagated and gifted to me. It was from a generational plant. It came from my best friend’s great aunt and her wife and was passed around to family members. My wife and I have no blood family, only chosen family and this meant a lot to us. It was wild to know we had a plant that started over 80 years ago. 🙂

  9. Well, I have a story about my cat knocking over a huge plant last night 😤

Yes! Plant at moms work. Never got water, only when I came around. Was so small and obviously wanted to live. One day I just said to her ”Bring it home” years later… and it’s my favorite plant. Because of the history we have together. That plant is now our second biggest plant and every day new leaves are growing. From a mere 4 cm to being bigger than an arm. Madagascar Jewel.

Some plants are weird, it’s as if they know and just go ”no, I want even better” like a stubborn, proud cat.

Overall, walking into flower shops, I look at the plants and think ”Aww” as if they are pets. so yes… But I most certainly treat them like pets and I kind of hope others do too

  11. In a small college class, our teacher gave us all spider plants that we had to name. It was my first little guy. It got MASSIVE and I’d put it outside in the summers. He had so many babies on him.

I went on a vacation for a week and it rained heavily at home while I was gone. I didn’t realize its pot didn’t have any drainage and it was completely submerged for a week. I gave him a big ole hair cut when all his leaves started dying and I thought he was cooked. Somehow he made it. It was a few years ago and he has a long way before he gets back to that.

But he’s the only thing that’s been everywhere I’ve been. 🫶🏻

My sweetest and most favorite fiddle leaf fig (Mimo) traveled with me when I was running away from an abusive ex. I wanted to protect her since they had a history of throwing away my plants and even burning them. Right now she’s (flf) going through the ringer because she had a spider mite infestation and I’m talking to her few remaining droopy leaves every day to tell her how much I love her and how I’m grateful for her. Send good vibes to Mimo because her stem is still green and I know she will get through this!!
