Found this in the yard in west TN near the Mississippi River. I thought it was an old dog toy when I picked it up. Once I realized it was a 'fruit' I cut into it. The flesh oxidized nearly instantly. There is a pit in the center, it have a lightly sweet/citrus smell. The texture on the outside is like old rubber and the fruit flesh is like unripe avocado. It also stained my hand (pic 3), even after washing/scrubbing my hands 18hrs later I still look like I have slight bruise where it stained.
It was found under this Eastern Redbud(?) BUT that really means nothing, There is a variety of plants in the back, That area is NOT scaped and has 'gone wild' for some time.

That’s a walnut.
You’re looking for a tree that will have fairly smooth light greyish bark if young, with compound pinnate leaves. And also probably more big green walnuts on it.
black walnut specifically
Black Walnut. I know someone has already said walnut but these are black walnuts.
Black walnut
Time to make nocino
I can smell this picture.
You can eat them, but I wouldn’t bother.
I love the smell of those!
When i was a kid i made dye out of them. My hands were stained for a week and my fingernails had to grow completely out to get rid of the stain- it took months!
Careful… Years ago my brother and I smashed one of those bitches open and some juice shot in his eye and he panicked and screamed until our mom flushed his eye under the sink.
Your hands will be stained for the foreseeable future.
I heard a burlap sack of those green shells will kill everything in the pond.
I have a couple of black walnut trees on my property and usually collect and clean a few of the nuts annually (wearing gloves, of course) to make ‘nut scratchers’.

Last year’s scratchers.
Did you find it on, near or by a “wal”?
Wait til they are dry and hard, then crack em open.
Also can throw these in a bucket of water for a month or two – free wood stain.
The first two pictures are probably black walnut. The other pictures are Redbud, probably Eastern Redbud. I grew up with Black Walnut trees around the property. The fruit around the shells are very hard to get off and often leaves your hands stained.
My dad used to gather them and then spread them over a big rubber tarp. He would then drive across them a few times to break away the green part from the main interior shell.
Walnut.
We used to fling them at each other for fun
The fruit is a walnut.
