My spreader deposited more fertilizer in the lines of my lawn’s new growth. I’m assuming it did the same with the seeds. Should I hand toss seed and fertilizer in the sparse areas?

  1. Damn, this is incredibly consistent germination. Just let this grass grow and you’re going to have the best lawn in the block!

If you’re using slow release organic fertilizer you can put more down. If you’re using regular stuff I wouldn’t do anything or you’ll burn out the new grass. Just let what’s there grow in and stay off it.

    1. Get a better spreader.

    2. Don’t try to put it all down in 1 pass. Have the rate set so it takes 2-3 passes. Do your first pass hover is best, then do the 2nd pass sideways. Then if there is still any leftover, the 3rd pass is on the diagonal.

Here, it looks like it’s the seed that is thicker in the rows, but the “thin” spots still look thick enough to me – I think when it grows in all the way you might not even notice. It should be unlikely that your fertilizer lines matched up exactly with the seed lines. And fertilizer lines dampen out with water application.

Doesn’t look like a very big lawn, you could hand apply some seed in the thinnest spots. When I grow new grass, for whatever reason, there are usually a few thin spots a few months later that require an overseeding or patch treatment.

Neither. Mow it soon, then mow it often, it’ll fill in.

How does Scott’s still sell this ridiculous product? It’s a disgrace.

  6. How soon should you mow new grass? I’m currently in a similar spot as OP.

  7. Scotts rotary spreader? What your spreading gets caught up inside the right wheel, then it drops it out in stripes. Mine does this too. Someday maybe I’ll look in to it. Meanwhile in your case i’d just let the grass grow.

Ditch the Scott’s spreader. Get an RB60
