Is the fruit mildly bitter with a hint of cherry molasses? We call those choke cherries by me though I know it’s not the proper name. Actual choke cherries I think are usually shrubbier
Can you provide a location? Even state would be helpful. It’s definitely a *Prunus* species, though it’s hard to say exactly which one without some geographic information.
