Coimbatore corporation to host expo on rooftop gardening next week Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation plans to create a rooftop garden in its main office located at Town Hall as part of its initiative to improve the urban canopy. While talking to TOI, corporation commissioner, M Sivaguru Prabakaran said out of the total target of one lakh saplings, around 46,519 have been achieved. He said, “Various initiatives are underway to complete the plantation target this financial year. We have identified heat islands that are influenced by factors like built-up area and location. For instance, the north zone is hotter than the central part of the city, so more plantations will be carried out there.” A unique initiative to create a rooftop garden will be unfolded in the main office as a model. Further, to encourage and engage the public to contribute to the green cover of the city, the corporation is hosting a rooftop gardening expo next week. From choosing the right plant suitable for their respective house to its maintenance, the public will be educated. Details on the type of manure to be used for specific plants and where to procure all these will be included in the expo. As part of the green cover enhancement, the medians on arterial roads like the Pollachi Road will be planted with flowering plants. Furthermore, all the medians of the flyovers have been partially planted, and the remaining sections will be completed in the upcoming weeks. So far, 23,145 palm saplings have been sown along the Noyyal bunds, all of which have shown a healthy growth, said the commissioner. More than 70,000 plantations, including palm trees, have been planted by the corporation. In this line, a miyawaki forest for about 45 acres of the reclaimed land at the Vellalore dumpyar is being maintained by the corporation, for which treated wastewater is being supplied for its maintenance.
