Hi y'all,
I bought a Done Right Premier 300 Chipper/Shredder from an estate sale for $250. It seemed BRAND NEW. While assembling it, everything matched the initial set up conditions.
No oil, no fuel, battery disconnected, clean tags and stickers, etc .
But it gushes fuel when I try to start it. (It doesn't start) the next thing I'm wondering about is the electric start function. It's supposed to have a key but they didn't find it at the estate sale. Do I need this key to start it manually?
Do y'all like DR, are they a good company?

Sounds like your float needle valve is leaking if fuel is gushing out. It’s been my experience that 80% of garage finds just need their carb cleaned out.
Where is it gushing fuel from? One of the clamps on the hose is probably lose. But yes you do need the key for manual start. That’s basically the on/off switch whether you have the battery for electric start charged or not. May be able to find a key on their website or take apart and put in a standard on/off switch instead of keyed one. Should just be 2 wires
A second thought to go with the first one. If by “gushing” fuel, you mean into the cylinder, then you’ve likely contaminated/diluted the oil already and will need to change it. Also, with liquid gas in the cylinder, it won’t turn over anyway due to the incompressibility of the fluid. Once you get it running, a cutoff valve inline isn’t a bad idea.
I don’t know about this shredder but I assume you need to be able to turn the key to the on position to get spark at the plug. You can simply bypass the wires from the ignition switch if that’s the case. As for pouring out fuel when you open the valve, it probably is the float being stuck, if that’s the case because you tear into the carburetor try tapping on the bowl of the carb with the handle of a screwdriver while you have the fuel on and see if that fixes your issue.
