Not really sure why that is. I have little test tubes for them, and I put 1-2 cuttings per tube. I’ve tried just plain water. I’ve tried water and hydrogen peroxide. I’ve tried water with growth hormone powder mixed in. They sit under a grow light for 10-12 hours a day. But they still just rot. Any ideas?

(This picture is from day #1. All these props have died, but just to show you my set up.)

The grow light time seems excessive- my water props sit on north facing windowsill with no supplemental light. They need to focus on root production not leaf growth.

All of my props are in clear plastic 16 oz cups (not test tube size containers). And I am lazy about potting them up – there’s about 6 props on my kitchen window right now that need to go into pots.

The tradescantia on the far left looks good. Did it rot too?

Mine do fine in glasses like these and are in eastern morning windows plus full spectrum grow lights. They do just fine
I don’t know what setting this is but I’m unsure the light is the right kind has a pink/blue tone to it. Maybe get a light meter to check?

Edit – i use plain tap water, maybe liquid fertilizer from time to time usually just tap.

I have used root hormone on the prop, and some times I have not. I don’t noticed much difference. But it can be a hit or miss. I have also used mainly just water props however some of my more difficult ones I used perlite with the water (snake and affrican violets) and they work better that way.

I just put them on shelves in front of my window and change the water every so often. Algae growth can happen but I started putting the clear jars inside of cups and bowls I wasn’t using and that has cut down on the Algae growth This worked out. Great in that I’m supposed to be cutting down but there were things I wanted to keep and am. To ready to get rid of yet.

the first thing I would change is the lights

for my props i just set them on the window sill or on the top part of the bottom window! i would try without a grow light 🙂

I try to prop 4-5 at a time because some always rot/die

R u cleaning the water? It needs to be oxygenated. Make sure to clean off rotting debris.
