Sudbury schools, charities and community groups have benefited from a garden centre’s £10,000 giveaway, as part of the celebrations for its 70th year in business.
Perrywood Garden Centre announced a community planting initiative for the milestone anniversary, by donating seeds and equipment to 38 different organisations across the region.
In the Sudbury area, where the business operates one of its centres, 16 projects benefited from a donation.

These include Acton Playgroup, which received plants, compost, pots and gardening gloves to support its gardening club, giving young children a chance to enjoy and appreciate the outdoor world.
Becky Judd, level 3 educator at Acton Playgroup, said: “Perrywood has had an enormous impact on us. Pretty much everything you see growing in our garden has come from Perrywood.
“We’ve now got a greenhouse where we grow seeds with the children every month, which they then take home to their parents. The children absolutely love this area.
“It’s wonderful to watch them, especially those children who may not have a garden at home, or have never seen anything growing in their own outdoor space.”
Among the other beneficiaries were Leading Lives at Sudbury Community Hub, which was given tailored plants and supplies to create a sensory garden for adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex needs.
Thomas Gainsborough School, in Great Cornard, also received plants and tools for its hands-on allotment project, to help students build their practical skills and confidence.
There were further donations for schools such as Pot Kiln, Wells Hall and St Andrew’s, the parish councils of Bures St Mary and Great Maplestead, and organisations like Phoenix Family Hub and Cornard Environment & Wildlife Group.
Perrywood communications director Hannah Powell, whose grandparents founded the business in 1955, said she was inspired by the role gardens play in ‘bringing people together and enriching lives’.
“Giving back to the community in this way has been incredibly special,” she said.
“I have truly enjoyed visiting several of the projects we supported to see their progress and witness first-hand the difference Perrywood has made.”
