So much for an early spring. Temps dropped to 34 degrees, which is right on the edge of damaging / killing tomatoes. These Bush Early Girl look OK for now, but time will tell. Stay tuned!

Hello friends it is link the Golf Coast Gardener today is Thursday February the 20th and it is cold it is 35° out today the wind is blowing I am not a happy G Coast Gardener at this moment but what can you do um back on the e8th I decided to try and experiment and plant some tomatoes out super early and that’s just what I did I had crossed my fingers and was lying to myself telling me that spring was here and the cold winter was passed and sure enough I was wrong but I I had some tomatoes in the ground anyway way and I guess a lot of it is going to depend on the variety I assume that some tomato varieties are more cold tolerant than others as a matter of fact I know they are now these are Bush early girl I honestly have no idea about the cold tolerance I know they make a ton of tomatoes that are incredibly delicious so it’s one of my favorite varieties to grow um so I’ll always grow Bush early girl now I also put these plastic sheets around around these this this end of the raised bed I use this really more as a wind shield than anything else cuz wind is a big challenge but when the temperatures are in the 30s and they and the wind is blowing on your plants it’s just cyanara right it’s most likely going to kill them but these guys look really good you wouldn’t know that it’s 35° out here these plants look as healthy as if it were 70° in my opinion but I’ll show you the difference I’ve actually got another tomato right over here this is something that isn’t quite as shielded from the wind and you can see that lower leaf on that has been wind bured that’s it’s it’s dark green it’s kind of turned into mush um I’m going to pull that plant up and put another one in its place but who knows I’m starting to think that these Bush early girls they look they look like they can handle mid 30° temperatures as long as you keep the wind from blasting them anyway I’ll keep you guys posted I’ll make another video in a couple of weeks and we’ll find out if planting tomatoes super early is really worth the time and the hassle thanks for watching have a great day

  1. Cold temperatures speak to the tomato plant. It may not kill them but their growth and fruit set will be impacted if they are exposed to temperatures below 40-50 degrees.
Ideally, they like 70-84 degrees during the day and 65-68 degrees at night. They like that slight fluctuation.
