Soon, rooftop gardening in urban areas Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh govt will soon launch a rooftop gardening scheme to promote urban horticulture.During a review meeting, the minister of state for horticulture, Dinesh Pratap Singh, directed the formulation of the scheme to encourage residents to grow vegetables, fruits, medicinal plants, and spices.He emphasized that rooftop gardening is an excellent method for enhancing greenery, natural beauty, and public health in urban environments. He noted that this modern approach is gaining popularity due to its ability to provide high-quality organic produce even in limited spaces.Singh instructed officials to prepare a detailed proposal for the scheme with technical support from the Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi, and seek approval from the Government of India. Initially, the scheme will be launched as a pilot project in major cities, including Lucknow, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur, to promote urban horticulture.Additional chief secretary for horticulture and food processing, B L Meena, said the govt plans to distribute free gardening kits and offer training sessions to raise awareness among citizens.
