Ashamed to say it, but this is my yard –

I can’t seem to get grass to take & for whatever reason these Hackberry suckers and saplings just won’t quit. (I cut them back every chance I get)

I feel like this yard needs a fresh start, but I’m afraid that if I just truck in a couple tons of soil to get the grass going, these suckers are going to takeoff even more than they already have.

Anybody out there got some advice for an amateur? It’s pretty clear…. I suck at this. Any and all guidance is greatly appreciated.

Is the seed sprouting then dying or not sprouting. In either case water is very likely the issue. Ideally you should be lightly watering 3-4 times a day for at least 2 weeks then slowly decrease after sprouting

  2. Seed requires a lot of water “every day” and takes about 3 years to really take hold.

Dig it over and rake out the roots and stones. If it’s mineral soil or clay, add topsoil or dig in loads of compost.

I’ve had success with putting topsoil and then seed down and covering it with netting that has hay embedded in it. It needs to be staked so it doesn’t blow away and it has to be watered daily. When grass is thick enough I pull off the netting and then weed by hand. It’s a process and it’s not cheap but it’s very doable. Otherwise, it might be worth getting a quote for some sod.

Its difficult to tell from a photo but that ground looks like it could use a good tilling. And probably some manure of some sort )llama beans are excellent) raked or tilled into it. Then see previous advice re seeds and watering.

Dirt looks dry as a desert. Pull as many weeds as you can. Till the area(break up the dirt) water heavily, seed, cover with straw mulch, continue to water everyday.

Hey! Gardening can make the strongest person into a wimp in a heartbeat!

I am a big fan of raised beds and I garden with vegetables and also with flowers. In between your raised beds, you could put some stone gravel to keep some of the weeds out. A place where I go to on YouTube to look at raised‘s beds and also to look at ideas for my yard is Vego gardening. Best of luck to you. You have a lot of ground to work with. I wish it was here at my place.👍❣️

Try planting just before winter, when spring arrives you’ll have a yard full of grass. This depends on where you live, if you live in a cold winter environment it works great

Nuke it with round up pro max And a pump sprayer. Kills everything in site so don’t put it anything u don’t want dead.
Let it kill everything for a week, rototill the soil, and. 1” layer of topsoil, seed, cover and water every day.
