Though you may have never heard of them, you have more than likely seen some of their work around Jefferson City.
The Bittersweet Garden Club is a non-profit for gardening enthusiasts, where they do everything from community beautification to garden therapy sessions.
The Bittersweet Garden Club in Jefferson City has been around since 1973.
The group is affiliated with the National Garden Clubs and has 90 active members.
“We’ve made wonderful friends through the group; they are a wonderful support group. I love all the things we do in the community,” said Linda Oligschlaeger.
The club has created flower gardens at McClung Park, the entrance of Memorial Park, and others throughout Jefferson City.
The group also conducts garden therapy sessions, offering workshops for residents of assisted living facilities.
“We do one a month, we go to 12 different nursing homes, and we do an activity with them. The ladies all bring treats, and the residents get to share them. Honestly, we get more out of it than they do,” explained Evelyn Samson.
And while it may not feel like it outside, the start to fall is Monday, September 22nd.
While many would think of spring as peak gardening season, many also consider the fall a great time to grab your shovel.
“They aren’t going to be put through the stress of hot weather. We do tend to have maybe more rain coming in as well, and as long as you plant them early enough to where they are rooted in well enough before that first hard freeze hits. Then they get a good start, and they get that time where they are going dormant, and so they settle in well,” explained Shirley Gassen.
And a great time to add seasonal charm.
“Another thing that people need to plant in the fall are bulbs, tulips, daffodils, and all kinds of other bulbs, and they need to be planted now,” explained Jennifer Urich.
Connecting others with a green thumb.
“Most of all, the friendships that I have made over the years are friendships that will last forever,” said Alice Hansen.
