You are the only seed seller I know that says you never have to buy seed again!😂 you are truly a gem in a see of God knows what! Appreciate you and your team so much! More than you will ever know. ❤
I've been saving bean seeds from my great grandpa's beans since I was in high school. Every year I plant his beans in my garden. I've been doing this for 25 years. Last Year I grew pole beans in addition to his bush beans, and from one MIgardener packet, I saved 1# of seed last year, and roughly 5# this year is out drying in the garden to save.
A little thing that I have done is put one of the little air packets that come in clothes when you buy new clothes. Put one of those in with the seed bean, tomato, pepper cetera and i put mine in baby food jars as i have a bunch from when the kids were babies.
Put.
Your seat in there drop your little air eliminator packet in and your ready to go.
Great info, we grow black beans , I pull the all out and trow them on a tarp to dry so when the pods open the seeds willstay on the tarp ,for the night and rain I cover them with the tarp, works well for us, we eat them all winter and save some feeds next summer.
Yes, I am going to save green bean seeds this year. Your video is very timely as I needed a little guidance on how to save these seeds! Thank you Luke!
Last fall I planted garlic and added bagged manure to all my raised beds. I was seriously underwhelmed at the production. Everything was green and looked healthy but very little vegetables and fruit. What did I do wrong? The garlic did do well.
I have had good results picking the bean pods and popping them in my dehydrator on very low. Anasazi are my favorite.
Did that with my sugar snap peas for my fall planting
I would love more seed saving videos. What about tomatos and okra? They are still producing here in Tennessee and I’d like to save some of their seeds if I can. Thanks.
LETTING YOU KNOW!!
Even though I purchased more than enough seed from MI Gardner for 2026 growing season I am attempting to save seed from every type of crop I grew this year. I think it’s important to continue to support businesses like yours that do so much for the community. I think it is equally important to keep these traditions and skills alive and well for food security, biodiversity, but more importantly the next generations of gardeners.
Genius. What don't the Amish know? 😅
After the seeds dry, how do you store them?
Excellent video!!! I don't always have the time to let the plant die back and I have wondered if I pull them and let them hang upside down. Well now I know I can. Years ago (before you got married) I watched a few of your videos on seed saving. They encouraged and taught me how to do it. I have saved tomato, cucumber, peas , and pepper seeds. I like this hanging way and I will try it this year. Thank you Luke for sharing all of your knowledge with us. Ps Yesterday I watched you video about your Grandpa. What a wonderful smart man just like you!
I have saved many bean (and other seeds) over the years. Depending on the year and weather permitting, I have either let them dry outside on the plant or dried the pods on cartboard.
All of this said, it has never stopped me from buying more seeds from you. 😂
Love your joy, Luke!!! Thanks so much for all the tips you give. I saved scarlet runner beans but I did have difficulty in drying them (some molded – due to my PNW climate). I think hanging them to dry is a great idea!!
can you do the same with pole beans, my husband is dying to clean the trellis but they aren't dry yet. Located in East TN and we have heavy dews in the morning.
Thank you for the advice ❤
I’m done canning green beans as of today. Now, after seeing this, I’ll dry the rest of them for next year!
Can you do that with carrot seeds where the flower is brown and somewhat dry?
LUKE-WISH YOU HAD POSTED THIS AUGUST 1ST. OUR 1ST FROST IS THE 1ST WEEK OF OCTOBER.
Thanks for the great video, Luke! Quick question – do you worry about cross-pollination if you're growing multiple varieties of beans and if so, how might it be prevented for seed saving?
Years ago, I tried saving bean seeds by leaving them in the ground. Had some get moldy. Love the idea of hanging inside!
Another excellent video, Luke! Yep, I've saved seeds from the bean plants that I planted using MIgardener seeds. Your seeds are always amazing! This season's garden produced enough tomatoes to can up 31 quarts of tomatoes, and most of those came from tomato seeds from you. I also have an amazing hot, and sweet, pepper crop all seeds from you. Going to be pickling them today. I've never had success with cucumbers until this year, and yep, MIgardener cucumber seeds. I have lemon cucumbers, Rhinish pickling cucumbers, and Marketer cucumbers that I've been harvesting the last couple weeks, and the others, Tendergreen and Poinsette 76 are still trying to put on fruit. Such fun! Thank you for all you do, Luke and MIgardener team and family!
i harvested almost 6lbs of dry pinto beans from a 4×6 bed and 2 packets of seed from your shop. was intended for a trial run for long term storage but i think we might have grown enough for a whole year.
Thanks for the tip! I was literally just wondering how to do this!
I'm gonna do it. Right now I'm going to grow out my beans then hang the bush!
Most seeds I've known how to save for a long time, but … when you were a teen still living at home, I learned how to save tomato seeds from you. I appreciate ALL of your videos, Luke. Even if I may already know something, you inspire me to get out in my garden. It's time to harvest my seeds!
Right on….❤
Hah! I was just out picking off some dry pole beans (we live in a drier climate) from my 3 Sisters garden to save. I grew Glass Gem and Cascade series corn, Cherokee Trail of Tears and Muni Chocame pole and Gaucho bush beans, and a huge variety of squash and pumpkins. I'm not planning on saving seed from the squash, the corn tasseled at different times, and the beans – well, if they cross a bit it's not a problem.
I've been growing out the Gaucho, Muni Chocame, and a landrace tepary bean for about four years now, and finally grew enough to actually eat some last year.
How about cross pollination? I raise a couple different varieties
Not saving beans, but I have done that with peppers…first frost came with sleet and it just got too cold/wet outside to harvest alll the cayenne. So I pulled the plant and hung it upside down in the house to dry off since my plan was to dry the peppers anyways.
I love saving seeds now after I learned this on my own.❤❤❤
Metro Detroiter here. We save them on the stalk in the garden. Time to start drying them upside down. I like that tip.
never thought about hanging the whole plant, great idea. thank you
This year I am trying to save some pole beans. I let them dry on the vine. Then I put them in a pot and let them sit I the greenhouse to help them dry out some more before putting them away. I do that with over seeds I save as well. Warm and air follow. Not 100% if it is right. But it has worked on my follow seeds I have saved. Normally I keep them in the greenhouse for about 2 weeks.
Excellent advice Luke! Thank you! 💕
Anyone who can call this man a FRAUD FOR ANY REASON, you need to totally disappear from this channel. Luke has done nothing but transparent and a good person, and a family man. No one can fault him for any of these traits. We love you Luke, your family and also your incredible staff. We thank you and salute you for all that you do. Nothing but awesomeness on tthis channel. I will always fiercely defend someone that I, one hundred percent believe in, and he is one of them.
Great video. Yes, I save seeds from beans, and many other garden treats. But I keep ordering from Migardener too!!!
Thank you! Great information.. I do have a question that isn't related to beans..lol.. I have never had success growing celery. It is always bitter. It's bitter when small and bitter when big. I am ready to give up. Is there a special trick to growing celery???
