I’m going to show you what we do with our ders over winter. I’m already getting lots of questions about this. So, late October, early November, we pull them out and dig up the clumps of tubers. This is because tubers can be at risk of rotting, being left in the wet soil over winter. But lots of people leave them and they are absolutely fine. And I have got some daily plants that I leave and they come back every single year. I want to make sure that every tuber is labeled clearly because you definitely will forget. I then put them upside down for a week or so in my garage to let any water drip out and then when they are dry I write the name of the tuber on the actual tuber with a Sharpie. Trim off the roots and then I store them in boxes of sawdust. This helps to keep them dry throughout the winter. Sawdust or wood shavings are really inexpensive and I actually get them from a local pet shop. So I layer up the tubers and make sure that it’s really full to the top with plenty of sawdust. This box then goes into my garage, which is dark and dry.
