Another big risk is toxoplasmosis! Always make sure to wash your hands after and not touch your face.

Somewhat related – even if you wear gloves make sure you keep your tetanus shots up-to-date. The bacteria is everywhere and any open wound or scratch can be a source of infection.

*”Clstridium tetanin spores are readily found in our environment. When these spores enter an open skin wound they develop bacteria that can spread throughout the body and cause illness. People who work or engage in outdoor activities on a regular basis (for example: farmers, firefighters, constructors, campers and gardeners) are at a higher risk.”*

I love them but ooooooo they are spicy.
Idk if it counts technically as a sting since it’s their mouthpart that is a giant syringe needle. More of a piercing bite? 🤔

I went through an insect collecting phase in elementary school. Caught one of these with my hands in a swimming pool. Went to climb out with my hand closed. Ouch!!!
Yes, that proboscis makes a big hole in little hands.

I must admit that I never wear gloves in the garden. Nothing terrible has ever happened to me

I only wear gloves when pulling lots of thistles, but even then I’ve been gardening barefoot most of my life and never had any issues.

Well RIP me cause I prefer those cheap woven cotton ones. For some reason they have really good dexterity and grip when pulling weeds (as compared to other “thin” gloves youd think would be better). Some dirt still gits through the holes between the weave, but they generally keep my hands clean.

Yikes. Hadn’t heard of them before now. I’ll have to keep an eye out.

Twice I’ve seen a praying mantis on my sunflower. The same sunflower. I have seen a praying mantis nowhere else.
I now keep an eye out for the praying mantis that really likes being on the sunflower 😅
