Uptown welcomed a new after-work hangout when the Plaza Beer Garden opened Thursday at Wells Fargo Plaza, 325 S. Tryon Street.
Every Thursday through December 4, Resident Culture Brewing will operate an outdoor pop-up there, along with Mimosa Grill, which sells a small menu of small bites.
If you read my reviews of Qamaria Yemini Coffee Co. and Vavela, then you know I’m a big coffee lover. Well, I also love a good craft beer.
So, on opening day of the beer garden, I asked some friends to join me there. Here’s my review.
Setting the Scene
The temperature was about 70 degrees, and the plaza was decorated with string lights, a mural and seating — four-top tables, benches and high-top tables.

The vibes felt professional and laid-back; many of the people looked as though they had just left work.
What I had
Resident Culture served four beers and four THC-infused seltzers. I opted to keep things simple and got a Mexican lager called Island Time — my go-to choice at Resident Culture. It has a good balance of sweetness and zest, thanks to the lime flavor.

I also had an Italian pilsner called Riding For The Feeling, which has a bit more kick. My friends ordered the IPA offerings, the Lightning Drop and Disco Baby.
We split an order of Salt and Pepper wings from Mimosa Grill, which operates nearby. The wings were well seasoned but had too much breading.
What I loved
Wells Fargo Plaza offers a stunning, sunset view of the city, which adds to the venue’s relaxing vibe. Whether alone or with friends, it offers a nice way to wind down while watching Uptown come to life as darkness descends. We struck up a pleasant conversation with a woman who was kind enough to take our photo.
In addition to bites and brews, the beer garden also offers live music.

A singer and guitarist played acoustic renditions ranging from ’80s rock to 2010s country. The performer was personable and interacted with the crowd throughout his set. The entire experience made for a perfect way to cap off my Thursday and head into the weekend.
The beer garden staff was friendly, chatting with us about the various beer options.
What I wish was different
Aside from complimentary water, the pop-up did not offer non-alcoholic drink options. Some soft drink options would have made it a spot that even more folks could enjoy.
In conclusion
My friends and I had a great time and would return to the Plaza Beer Garden. It’s the perfect addition to Uptown as we head into the fall season.
