Hey guys! Its my first time doing a moss terrarium. My SO bought this for me 2 days ago and I designed the landscape inside. My question is I can see some brownish color on the moss, is it lacking in water? Too much water?

The photo is a bit more vibrant but in person the brownish color is easily noticeable.

Any tips that you can give is appreciated.

Do you keep it open? If yes then the moss might be drying out.

Moss can be quite hard to get right, especially if it has been grown outdoors then put in a terrarium with different conditions.

Firstly I’d say here the soil is too wet, also quite organic so mould/fungi will spread to the moss. Moss doesn’t actually need any organic material in the soil since they don’t absorb nutrients from the soil.

Some mosses also need to dry out slightly then have rain move over the leaves to wash them, also they need a certain amount of light. But that all depends on the species so it can be hard to figure that out.

In this case the main issue is the wet soil, so try to dry that out, but be careful not to dry the moss itself too much. Does this enclosure have a drainage layer?

  3. If you harvested the moss from where you live, do your best to replicate the environment it had with regard to light especially. Don’t close the top. Spray the moss each morning enough to give the moss a good drink, but don’t spray enough to wet the soil more than 1/4” or so. That way it can dry a bit between morning spray, which will replicate morning dew fall. Light… it’s going to take way more than you think. [Check here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Mosses/s/m6izSjozIs)
