Hello r/composting! I have recently started in a 16 gallon tub on my patio. It’s mostly food scraps and paper bags/cardboard. However, there are SO MANY GNATS. I’ve tried adding a ton of browns and they keep coming back 🙁 Please help me ❣️

I’m newer to composting, but I’m gonna say that’s natural. Not much you can do.

I mix browns in, but also leave a good layer on top. Cuts down on the gnats and smell.

Imo you could probably use more browns. But ad a general rule of thumb with the way you are doing things, I would have atleast a 3 inch layer of cardboard on top of everything. It will cut down the smell and attractant! If it’s too much work they won’t go for it.

I compost on the ground in the backyard. I get everything you can think of.

Volume! You need more space and a good mix of greens and browns.

My Earth Machine just spit out some inky mushrooms which means it is trying to eat the woody stuff I put in there.
