It’s roughly 2 sqm, and it’s between the bedroom window & the brick wall of our garage. There’s no direct sunlight in this patch of grass so we’re really stumped on what to do with the space.
Should we put plant pots in or pant something directly into the soil? Is there any climbing plant that would grow in this type of environment?
Any recommendations welcome! We’re keen to have some greenery too look at out the window instead of a brick wall!

Things like Ferns probably the ideal. A nice plant outside a window
Ficus Hilli in a decorative pot resting over a paver slab.
knock on a few bricks with an umbrella and it will open up to a mysterious alley
I’ve got the same spot. Sigh.
Clivia, always Clivia.
Crassula Buddha’s temple
Honestly, it’d be a fantastic spot for a lifesize cut-out of Tom Jones. I’d recommend it be printed on aluminium otherwise you could SAV on Alucabond.
What about a potted plant that climbs the wall
Indigofera australis or native vanilla lily in pots. Both will flower in shade too
Plant a mini jungle, parlour palms, dracaena, clivia, bromeliads etc.
If you do it well you could create a nice little microclimate in there.
Ferns, mountain pepper, tasman flax lily, dichondra
All appreciate a bit of water, but I would suggest in planters or pots for ease of maintenance
Fatsia japonica
Pavers
Basil
First thing to note is that too much water going into the ground right next to your house is probably not good. That means pots would be best, and a way to drain the excess water somewhere else.
If there’s no direct sunlight then any indoor plant will do. You could do hoya, ficus, peace lily, pothos, zz plant, calathea, monstera, etc.
Ferns would be great, if you can keep the humidity up. Tree ferns would be the ultimate rainforest look. Not sure about tree ferns in pots though, maybe a large container like a raised bed sealed off from the ground?
If you want to look out the window and see the plants, you want them at eye level. You could get a raised planter (one of the ones on legs that people use to grow vegies) and put ferns in it and also plant something that trails over the side. Staghorn ferns will hang on the brick wall attached to a piece of dead wood.
If grass is growing, there must be some sunlight.
Zanzibar gems don’t require much sunlight if any sunlight
Build a little roof. Setup an outdoor dart board.
Vines maybe
Ferns
If they are your windows set up some spotlights and cannabis would be great
Leave it alone.
Just because it’s empty doesn’t mean you have to fill it.
Otherwise check out what a Japanese landscape artist might do with it.
Moss
Clivia
Plant nothing, install hammock
Kiwi Fruit tree
ferns and violets
Don’t plant anything. Concrete the base, put a roof on it and rent it out for $300 a week.
Prison cell for plants
See what native plants your local nursery have to suit your conditions – native violets, maidenhair ferns. The botanical planet on instagram has a thread on their instagram dedicated to natives that thrive in shade.
Leafy greens, parsley…
Make a little rockery with Moss, ferns, and epiphytic orchids… even some stag horns on the walls if it’s the right climate.
Mushrooms
Cannabis, will be well hidden from
