How to level your lawn and yard with sand. This is for warm season grass, like Bermuda. Watch till the end to see my results from last year (if you’re skeptical!).

I’m about to level my yard. First, I’m going to need a cubic yard of sand for every 1,000 square ft of yard. In this case, that’s going to be about two tons. I’m going to use this wheelbarrow to spread out the division of labor because it’s a little labor intensive. Now, I’m going to fill the wheelbarrow with sand and deposit it all over my yard, kind of like a grid. This is going to make my next step a lot easier to do when I have to spread it out evenly. And for that, I’ll be using this leveling rake. Now, you can use a leveling rake like this or an upside down rake with a wide surface or even a pallet that you drag across the yard. Either way, your objective here is to make sure that the sand is evenly distributed across your yard and getting pushed down into the canopy of your grass. Finally, I’m going to fertilize this bad boy with some fast acting liquid nitrogen and then water it in probably every day for the first week. And I’m done. Looks like garbage right now, but in a couple weeks it’s going to pop.

  1. I fucking hate lawn guys…… think of all this effort, just to impress your neighbors and not grow anything. Think of all the fruits and veggies you could grow and give to a food bank???? But no, let's grow a non-native species that does literally nothing.

  2. It's weird just how stupid youtubers are today… Imagine being so dumb, you don't realize those mics are supposed to clip onto the clothes so you don't look like a pathetic idiot holding it.

  3. "The goal is to make sure that the sand is evenly distributed across your yard"…. – if you evenly distribute all of your sand perfect – you have not leveled anything – you've just raised the height of everything by however thick your uniform layer of sand is – bumps and all 🙂 but we know what you're getting at….

  4. I've been seeing this around. I have a bunch of weeds though. Is it better to kill the weeds then do the sand method. Or sand then deal with the weeds later?

  5. I am allergic to grass (and just about everything that grows) so I don't do the yard work stuff. Part of the reason for living in a townhouse community.
BUT I am so surprised at how few people know about the sand leveling and other things shown for maintaining your yards.
I remember my Dad doing that 60 years ago and how our yard was always so nice to be in / on. Our house was the one that all the kids in the neighbourhood collected in.
We had a trampoline, horseshoe pits, badminton court and heavy traffic / play all the time.
The grass was soft and responsive with good drainage and great longevity in the warm / dry season.
Why do so few people know how to take care of their investment of their property ?
Glad for these videos to educate in the lost arts !

  6. Yeah but much of my yard is weeds. I refuse to spray glyphosate in my yard. I don’t mind the clover, but the crab grass is super annoying.

  7. I’ve never done this before but I tell you Fertilizing the sand don’t make sense 🤦🏼‍♂️

  8. Getting 2 Tons of USGA grade sand delivered today (first time ever leveling)

    Wish me luck

  9. The fact that you're using sand for a lawn just reinforces to me that I know nothing about lawns, and don't want to. And I have over an acre to mow tonight, and will spend the whole time wishing it had burned out already

  10. Hi @bermudadad , if my lawn has some bare spots would I be able to patch it after applying the sand or should that be first thing to do?

  11. Since you’ve been doing this for three years, how much sand is on top of your soil now? Does sand still have nutrients etc for the grass? I want to do this but I’m afraid my lawn is so bumpy and it’ll fill with an inch of sand in some spots lol.

  12. Will you be adding any compost or nutrients later? Using only sand to level can create deficiencies without amending

  13. Do you actually level with MASON or MASONRY sand? Need to go through this process but the different sands on FB marketplace is so confusing

  14. I’m always confused why someone would put fertilizer down after the fact. Wouldn’t you want to put it down before you put in the sand?
