A single yellow rose in honour of Julia Withers’ late husband represented her win of this year’s Hilary Budden Memorial Award.
The St Andrew’s Presbyterian Spring Flower Show and Fair was held last Saturday, with hundreds of vibrant flowers marking the beginning of the season.
Julia snagged the prize for the most successful exhibitor, as multiple entries won first places.
Long-time readers may know Julia’s flower displays would often dominate Gunnedah flower shows. Julia would thank her husband for his help in flower arrangements.
This year she entered many sections as per usual but found it a little more difficult without her “assistant” by her side.
Rod Withers loved roses, especially yellow ones. When Julia spotted the only yellow rose in her garden, she knew it would be dedicated to him.
That was not the only yellow entry in this year’s competition. She pointed out her favourite flower arrangement featuring daffodils.
She has been entering flowers in the show for about 20 years.
“It is just something I love doing,” she said.
“It is stressful at times, but usually it gives me a good lift.”
Mary Browne was crowned the champion exhibitor of the show with her vibrant Camellia proudly displayed on the winning table.
The annual market is a charity opportunity for the church. People browse the stalls while children play a game of hoops, and families stop for a cup of tea and sweet treats lovingly made by kitchen volunteers.
Mary Browne won Champion Exhibitor.
