Hi all. I’m in 6b and over seeded 8 days ago with tttf. Some of the existing grass is getting long already and laying over.
I’m having some people over on Saturday which is already a risk to the new grass. Wondering if I should mow Saturday morning as well?
Most germination is at the stage in the first pic, with some as small as the second pic.
Thanks!

Cool season grass should be mowed around 3 1/2 inches. You never want to take off more than 1/3 of the blade of grass therefore ideally the grass is 4 1/2inches before you mow it . starter fertilizer and continuing to keep it moist is the best thing. I would keep foot traffic off as much as possible.
Haters are hilarious. What are down voting for??😂
If you really want to mow, then just mow around these spots.
Don’t let people walk on it and don’t mow. This is excellent germination for 8 days and it will only get better if you keep off it and water it. Give it some time.
Set deck to 3″ and go at it. If the grass has rooted even a bit, it should be good to go.
People always say don’t mow. I was in a similar spot, and my old grass was already pushing probably 5″+. I mowed. It’s not that serious. Just be careful around those spots and avoid them with your tires if you can. Let the ground firm up/dry up a little bit and water after. I don’t get what the alternative is. How can people go 10-14+ days without mowing specially if you put down starter fertilizer.
Just mow it, you’ll be fine. Avoid large areas that are only seedlings unless the wheel tracks go over it.
Push mower if possible. Deflate tires on a rider and avoid turns on new grass. You’ll be good
You didn’t scalp it before you seeded? Don’t mow until you have absolutely no choice.
If It makes you feel better I gave up and mowed after like 8 days on mine cause I didn’t think it would work anyways with the amount of weeds I have but came out today (day 11) and seeing a bunch of sprouts.
Id just mow around it. That is if mine ever sprout. 😭
I think I’m mowing Friday. My new ones are just starting to sprout but the existing grass is about 5 inches tall now and bending over.
Generally you don’t mow seedlings until they hit3 inches. If you’re concerned that the existing grass is shading it out and really need to mow then go for it but make sure it’s somewhat dry beforehand, and avoid skids. Same with when the guests are over, I wouldn’t water too close to when they are arriving.
Sharpen the blade before you mow.
You can cut at 3″. If it’s lying over, cut it. Just don’t water it the day of so the soil isn’t muddy or soft so you don’t mash the grass down into the dirt. And in general dont let foot traffic on it for maybe the first 4-6 weeks.
Why would you mow?
I overseeded 12 days ago and did my first mow today. Also having people over Saturday and can’t have unkept grass. Mine is much further along and mowed great. Had to try to minimize tire turns from causing imprints though.
If I were you I would mow 2.5” and throw down more seed. The people coming over will press the seed in with their feet. Start watering again Sunday
