I really wish I were better at growing things. I am always SO jealous of folks with beautiful gardens full of flowers. A friend of mine maintains a vegetable garden in the summer and pretty much grows dinner for her family during the warm months.
A Green Thumb From Ukraine to Indiana
Some people just have that special touch. A Green Thumb. There is no better example of this than Alex Babich of Fort Wayne, Indiana. To honor his Ukrainian heritage and encourage his homeland, he has been nurturing sunflowers, Ukraine’s official flower. For seven years now, he has been learning about them and trading seeds with people from all over the world.
Tallest Sunflower in the United States
In 2022, Babich grew a 25 ft 2 in tall sunflower that broke the record for the tallest in the United States. He broke his own record by almost a foot the next year, but hasn’t beaten his best since then. Until now.
‘Clover,’ the Tallest Sunflower in the World
What started as a tiny sprig has been loved and cared for by the competitive grower and his family. They’ve built scaffolding to support the massive flower and climbed up and down ladders countless times to pamper and cultivate “Clover.”
According to guinnessworldrecords.com, “The now world-record specimen was nicknamed ‘Clover’ after Alex’s son, Keenai, kept finding four-leaf clovers in their backyard and placing them on the plant for good luck as it was growing, which seemed to pay off!”
New Guinness World Record For Tallest Sunflower in Indiana
It’s officially official. The Guinness Book of World Records has confirmed and announced that Babich’s Clover is now the tallest in the world. At 35 feet 9 inches, it has far surpassed the title given to Hans-Peter Schiffer of Germany in 2014. His sunflower measured in at 30 feet 1 inch tall.
