As the summer season draws to a close, it’s time for gardening fans to consider which new plants, fruits, and vegetables to grow in their gardens. Retailers ranging from supermarkets and garden centres to online stores offer a variety of indoor and outdoor plants at different price points.
A seasoned gardener has shared a savvy tip for those keen on gardening, advising on the types of plants to buy in September for cost savings. Gardening with Ish, a popular content creator known for his gardening expert advice, demonstrations, and reviews on Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, where he has amassed 111,000 followers, recently shared some wisdom on the platform.
In his latest TikTok video, he remarked: “Today in the garden I’m gonna show you why buying discount plants in September is the smartest thing a gardener can do.”
He explained that DIY stores and supermarkets follow a set sales calendar, leading to automatic markdowns of plant prices at certain times of the year.
The guru pointed out for many retailers, September marks the end of the gardening season, prompting them to “dramatically reduce” the cost of their plants.
In the video, he showed a hydrangea that was marked down from £16 to £3 and an achillea plant reduced from £10 to just £2.
He then reassured viewers by saying: “But, what’s wrong with them? The answer? Well, nothing at all.
“In fact, this is actually perfectly healthy but because there’s a few dead flowers on the top they don’t know that actually this is a perfectly fine plant that is a perennial that will come back year after year and all you need to do is just give it a good tidy up.”
The horticulture specialist recommends trimming back dead foliage, guaranteeing that you’ll be able to plant it immediately “while the soil remains warm”.

He went on: “A little bit of a tidy up and you’d never know that the supermarket thought that was on its last legs and because it is September, you can plant these directly in the ground now.”
Gardening with Ish observed that these specimens will become dormant throughout the winter period but will return in springtime when they’ll be “absolutely thriving.”
When browsing for discounted plants at the supermarket, the experienced gardener suggests choosing perennials and hardy varieties as they’ll flourish during winter.
For plants that lack hardiness, Gardening with Ish advises keeping them in a greenhouse until the following year and he warned against bothering with bedding plants as they’re “not going to make it.”
He displayed a healthy-looking hydrangea in a container that he disclosed he’d nurtured several months previously and concluded: “So it just goes to show if you spend a bit of time taking care of your plants you can spend a lot less and have a much more fuller garden next year.”
In his TikTok caption, he emphasised: “Now is the perfect time to take advantage of the pricing system at supermarkets and DIY stores!
“In September they start dramatically reducing perfectly healthy plants to get rid of stock and you’ll get a mature plant a lot less than you would have a couple weeks ago.
“A clever gardening hack to fill your beds and borders for a lot less and ready for next year.”
The TikTok video has attracted 51,900 views, more than 2,000 likes and a number of comments.
One gardening fan commented: “I’ve filled my new build garden nearly entirely with the reject section of B&Q. Saved a fortune.” Another remarked: “Oh I love a reduction section in Dobbies.”
