The BBC presenter has advised gardeners to follow his simple but effective seed-collecting advice this September, to gain a plethora of plants, which you can even share among family and friends.

Don recommends that growing your favourite plants from seed is “easy and practically without cost”, giving you dozens of free plants for future years.

Green-fingered gardeners should find an A5-sized brown paper envelope, carefully cut the seed heads, and upend them into the envelope.

The seed head should be fully inside, or else place the envelope over the head, seal it, and then cut the stem off and store it upside down.

You’ll need to be somewhat organised to ensure that you make the most of your seeds, with Don advising that each envelope should clearly state the date, name of the plant, and ideally its position in the garden.

After being stored in a cool and dry place for a week or so, seeds can be sieved, cleaned and stored in seal packets or a plastic tub with a tight lid will keep them alive for longer.

If you’re thinking ahead to October and the Autumnal months already, you can prepare to “save yourself a fortune” by collecting seeds from perennial plants next month.

Don suggests using paper (not polythene) bags, labelling seed packets immediately, and then storing them in a cool, dry place until ready for sowing.
