Just got this tillandsia Ionantha x Exserta recently. Seller said it is not the tillandsia jumping for joy. Maybe it’s because this USA bred hybrid I got is doesn’t have the characteristics of jumping for joy tillandsia?

    Nice plant!

Strictly speaking, for hybrids with ‘fancy’ names, the name is referring to the particular clone that is registered under that name. Only the offsets of that clone with identical genetics can be referred using that name. Even the siblings from the same seed pod as the registered plant should not be referred to using that name because the genetics are different.

Of course, this is not enforcible and people do not care, so many growers name their own hybrids using the registered name. For example, there are so many varieties of Curly Slim because growers just name their intermedia x streptophylla Curly Slim. I would love to get the original Curly Slim.

In your case, the grower did the ‘right’ thing by not naming the hybrid Jumping For Joy even though it is the same cross.
