Organizers say the Warren Community Garden that kicked off this year on Toepfer Road was a great success.

“We had 12 garden beads and grew and gave out more than 100 pounds of food,” said garden volunteer Lauren Schandevel. “We are looking to renew the lease on the property or possibly purchase it.”

At a Tuesday meeting, Warren City Council President Angela Rogensues asked council attorney Jeff Schroder what the next steps would be to ensure garden volunteers had a plan firmly in place prior to the start of the 2026 growing season.

“This was a pilot project, so I would say work with (public service director) David Muzzarelli and either bring back renewal of the lease or develop an actual program for this,” Schroder said. “The land bank could be involved with this as well because this was a vacant parcel that was used for the project.”

Councilman Jonathan Lafferty said the lease agreement used for the Warren Community Garden, which is located east of Schoenherr Road on Toepfer, could be a template for other groups that may want to establish gardens in other areas of the city.

“This first lease was a one off and was done really lightening quick because nothing was getting done and it was getting toward late spring,” said Schroder. “But we have plenty of time over the winter to figure this out before the snow melts next year.”

Moore said the city council supports the Warren Community Garden and is willing to work to ensure they can operate next year and into the future.
