Veteran actor Song Kang-ho has officially joined director Nam Dong-hyeop’s upcoming project ‘The Gardeners’ (working title). The film follows the story of a civil servant who finds joy in raising plants but is suddenly burdened with a massive debt. In an attempt to resolve his crisis, he teams up with the town’s troublemaker to launch an unorthodox gardening business, dragging a once quiet neighbourhood into unexpected turmoil.
Song Kang-ho’s role
Song Kang-ho will take on the role of Choi Young-il, a diligent government worker whose only happiness lies in his life as a “plant butler.” Known for his versatility and powerful performances, Song holds the rare distinction of starring in four films that surpassed 10 million viewers in Korea. In 2022, he became the first Korean actor to win Best Actor at the 75th Cannes Film Festival for his role in ‘Broker’. His career-defining performance in ‘Parasite’ already cemented his reputation with global audiences, and his new character is expected to showcase his irreplaceable presence once again.
The director’s rising influence
Nam Dong-hyeop, who gained industry attention with last year’s ‘The Handsome Guys’, will be at the helm of ‘The Gardeners’. That film, a blend of occult and comedy, displayed his bold storytelling and fresh style, earning him recognition at distinguished events such as the 23rd Directors Cut Awards (Best New Director) and Spain’s Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival (Panorama Audience Award). According to SportsHankook, industry insiders believe Nam will use this new project to further solidify his status as one of Korea’s most promising next-generation filmmakers.
Anticipation for release
With a celebrated actor and a rising filmmaker collaborating, ‘The Gardeners’ is generating momentum before even beginning production. The unique storyline, combined with Song Kang-ho’s proven ability to embody ordinary yet extraordinary characters and Nam Dong-hyeop’s innovative direction, raises excitement for how this collaboration will resonate with audiences both domestically and internationally.
