Hello folks, this week I take you through a typical winter day pottering around the garden. I’m taking the days slowly and enjoying the restful time before things get busy again growing our summer/autumn crop.
I hope you have a beautiful weekend,
Amy

[Music] Oh, [Music] heat. [Music] The nights have been frosty and the days cold but sunny with a good splash of rain as well. I’ve been starting my days slower with my normal routine but not having to rush. Instead, having time as I wait for the frost to melt. [Music] [Laughter] Hey. [Music] It’s 2 years since I started this channel and it was a slow start at the beginning. I wasn’t able to post every week like I am now. But now each week I look forward to bringing you at least one video. I’m so very grateful for all of you here, for all your beautiful comments, for your encouragement, and for the community we’re building here. I started this channel because I don’t have a lot of people around me that are likeminded and doing the same things that we’re doing here. And I knew I would find you all here. And I’m very grateful that I did. I’m harvesting some tiny spinach leaves today. Some of the leaves got a little bit soggy with all the rain that we have had. So, I’m harvesting as much as I can because we’re expecting another lot of rain to come Monday and Tuesday. That’s where it’s forecast, but it could move um from there. It looks like we’re going to have a sunny Saturday, which will be lovely. We’ve had glimpses of the sun this morning, and I wish it will come out because our off-grid system is really struggling. The solar really needs a good boost from the sun. We’ve been working on some projects behind the scenes and planning what we’re doing for the second half of this year. There’s always a long list of to-dos on a farm and we’re trying to prioritize things and also detocking our animals because of the dry summers we’re going to be receiving for quite a few summers to come. So, we’re focusing our attention on maintenance, on maintaining things, and also trying to get a few of those projects that have been on the list for a while done. [Music] Look at this bundle of lettuce here. It’s just absolutely suffocating this brassica that that is um in between all of these plants. So, I’m just going to pull out some of these lettucees and save the lettuce leaves to eat. But by pulling out the entire plant, of course, cuz it’s all wet, the soil’s sticking to the roots a bit. Yeah. By pulling these out and the grass as well. There’s a little bit of grass growing. There’s also a lot of chickweed growing as well, which I use and eat. And I will be doing a video on the chickweed very soon because it’s at its best through winter and then into the start of spring. But because I’ve got a lot of it growing and I just like to keep on top of the chickweed and make sure it doesn’t take over my patches completely, I’m not really pulling out this grass very well. But yeah, I I will be doing a video on it soon and what I do with it. This um cabbage plant here is very small and it’s gotten a bit leggy because of all of the greens growing around it. So, I’m not sure how well it will do, but this will definitely help. Look what I found. After I tell you I don’t get slugs in my garden. We get these black slugs occasionally and we mostly get them in the front garden. But yeah, my chickens will be delighted to eat this. Wait, ch another lovely blue egg. We’re getting at least one egg a day at the moment. And most of them are these blue ones. Sometimes we get two blue ones, which is nice. [Music] All of this lettuce came from seed. that one of my lettucees dropped. I shook it all about in this section. So, it’s very, very congested. There’s a couple of different lettucees. Actually, that’s a different one there. It’s no wonder a slug has come into this section of my garden with all of the leaves being so tight together. It’s the perfect hideyhole for a slug. Look at all this gorgeous chickweed. And it’s growing right next to these coal rabbies that I sewed myself and they’re growing up quite well. I’m really looking forward to eating these. [Music] My dogs keep digging up this compost bin. So, I’ve got two bones out of the freezer. Hopefully, this will distract them from digging in my garden. Are you going to take it? [Music] There’s quite a lot of weeding to do, so I must get on to that because with the next lot of rain that’s coming, it makes it harder. So, I have to try and beat the rain. My youngest daughter wanted to get one of these mushroom kits, and we grew some mushrooms from it. It was lots of fun, but it failed to produce a second lot of mushrooms, which I was quite disappointed about, but it’s also inspired me to delve into growing mushrooms. So, I’m definitely going to be giving that a go at some point. But what I thought I’d do, it sort of says to put this down in your garden as mulch. And I’m wondering if I spread this into parts of my garden. And with the rain that’s coming and the moisture that’s in my garden at the moment, hopefully we will get some mushrooms growing directly in the garden. I want to choose a part of my garden where there’s other things growing so that it has a bit of shade. There’s a lot of weeds in this section. So, I’m just going to weed the area and then pop this down as mulch and see what happens. Oh, look, there’s a worm. [Music] That’s the issue with weeding after it’s rained. [Music] I couldn’t wait any longer. I just needed to harvest one of the heads off my sprouting broccoli. As you can see, I’ve also taken another one that was coming up as well. There are plenty coming up on that plant. And this will mean that the plant will give all the energy to those other heads coming up now that I’ve taken this off the top. Well, I have quite a collection of food here. And I’m going to go inside and make myself a warm quinoa salad, I think, with all of these goodies, all of these greens. And I’m probably going to boil some eggs as well. We’ve got some older green eggs that I’m excited to boil up. Well, I hope you enjoyed that little meander in my garden and me getting a few things done. I hope you have a gorgeous weekend and you get to have some time in the garden. I’m really looking forward to our sunny Saturday and getting quite a bit of weeding done out here before the next lot of rain. We’re looking at getting a maximum of 20 ms coming over 2 days. So, that’s quite a lot of rain and the tank is still filling up. It got quite low during that dry summer that we had. And our dams are also filling up, which is delightful to see. I’m hoping we get enough water to see us through another dry summer. See you next time, friends. [Music]

Lovely video, and thank you for sharing why you started your channel.
I’m really interested to see your mushroom ‘compost’ experiment. I have the same issue with my block of mushrooms and was planning to do the same thing with them 😊
Hi friends, happy winter solstice for Saturday!
I hope you are all staying warm and enjoying some slower days.
Here’s to the sun coming back and the days getting longer.
Amy 🌻
Love your lifestyle, the vegetable garden is amazing , I have a small garden which gives my wife and I lovely fresh food but my garden needs chooks and Jack Russells . My children bought me a small green house and I grew my broccoli and cauliflower from seed for my first time and they are looking great and I hated beans till I grew my own what a difference to store bought and have introduced rhubarb to the grandkids 2 out of 4 love it , we don’t get severe frost as we are close to the coast , thanks for your channel
Slower days? I'd be lucky! We bought a property recently & need fuel reduction work done including some trees. Desperately trying to set something temporary up so we can at least start growing something ready for spring planting.
We have mushrooms growing in our horse paddocks, which surprised me because i thought it would be too cold, so I'll be cheering your mushroom spawn on!
I need to use some chickweed too. It’s growing like crazy! Loving our sunny day today.
I give my dog a bone and she loves to bury them in my veggie garden because it's nice and soft.
I would add coffee grounds to the mushroom mulch you put down. Over here in alphington they use it as a medium to grow mushrooms in shipping containers. At the alphington farmer’s market
Happy winter solstice sweetie, we too have not had much rain at all over in West Gippsland, its been going around us. We are currently resting our garden beds, but crops will go back in within the next couple of weeks so exciting!!!!
Some mushroom are a little harder to get a decent second flush and conditions matter, particularly temperatures. I changed how I grow them this time after I was shown how they grow them where I got my kit from. He gave me great tips and it's working very well. Keep trying 😀
New sub here from inner city Sydney yearning for the land. It would be great to watch you grow mushrooms I really hope you are able to and bring us all along.
I love your style of videos, keep doing what you are doing and are feeling comfortable with. Maybe adding a few shorts here and there could attract those who do not have the time or do not want to watch lenghty videos. I enjoy both, during the week I'm more a shorts consumer and on weekends I have the time and watch a few long ones while having coffee or while baking/cooking.
I have slug problems – my spoilt chickens refuse to eat them! 🙂
Awesome, love. Tuesday's gonna be a chilly one down our end, they reckon.
I suspend tied up leaves for our chooks which they seem to enjoy.
QUESTION: Have you had issues with curl grubs this year? I've been inundated & have been digging hundreds out of our raised crates.
Love your background music & how you edit 🤌🏆
Excellent work and superb video ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 amazing….🎉🎉
Tuesday here where I am in Victoria (not far from you). Bitterly cold today. Tomorrow is supposed to be even colder.
I don’t see the frost because I struggle to get up early in the morning. Beautiful vegetables Amy.
Thanks for a great Video.
❤❤❤❤❤😊
1:00 Toe beans! So cute
The chick weed? I thought was a weed!💜
