Plants with limited sun

Hi all, looking for some advice. Got rid of a bunch of Canadian thistle and tarped and rocks on top. We wanted to plant some arbor vitaes and a Japanese maple in the area but we are concerned with the amount of sun this area gets. This area is shaded most of the day with limited sun early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Would arbor vitaes and a Japanese maple do well here? If not what plants would you recommend? Looking for things that are low maintenance and not a lot of mess or pruning needed. Thanks in advance!!
