MOUNT VERNON — The Vine & Lawn Community Garden officially opened Aug. 26 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in partnership with the Knox County Chamber of Commerce.

The event brought together community leaders, partners, and residents to celebrate the
launch of the garden, which was designed to provide access to fresh produce and a
welcoming space for connection.

Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr and United Way’s Resource Navigator and Vine & Lawn member Walt Lewis shared remarks.

“We saw the need for fresh food … and the community came together,” Lewis said. “The most outstanding thing is that it has broken down social isolation. Even the older adults enjoy the accessibility. We are keeping it open for everyone.”

Starr reinforced the social impact of the garden in his remarks.

“It gets people out of the house. It gets people talking. You’re not only gardening, you are developing those relationships. You are building trust with your neighbors,” he said.

“This is a perfect model, and I’d like to see it replicated in other parts of the city.”

Located between Vine Street and Lawn Avenue in Mount Vernon, this is a space to grow food, connect, and learn. With raised beds, pollinator plants, and hands-on workshops, the garden offers opportunities for residents to rent a plot, volunteer, or donate to help the community bloom.

The Vine & Lawn Community Garden represents a collaborative effort to bring neighbors together, encourage local food growth, and create a stronger, healthier community for all.
