I have recently moved into a new house and had the hedges cut back, they were 4ft deep and taking up a huge chunk of the garden, but as they had not been previously maintained the cut back revealed that there was no growth behind the front at the bottom so now I’m left with this. Any ideas on what to do next to make this look better? Kind of wishing I’d left it alone!

Hosta?
Now that it’s been cut back and there’s more light to the base, you may find it will regrow from the bottom. Failing that you’ll need some plants that are ok in shade. Hostas are ok, but a haven for slugs, or you could try some ferns.
Another option would be to cut the hedge right back to a couple of foot. It’ll look a bit of a mess for a while, but there’s a good chance that it will regrow and then be more manageable
I second a row of ferns
