As September arrives, a fresh set of garden tasks awaits us, since this marks the period for cutting back and pruning plants that have completed their yearly bloom. However, if you’re discovering your garden appears bare and colourless after your plants and blooms have withered, don’t worry as one horticultural expert revealed his advice on maintaining continuous flowering well into winter, allowing you to restore some vibrancy.
Posting on social media, where he’s better known as The Mediterranean Gardener boasting over 701,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram, gardening specialist Michael Griffiths has disclosed his best recommendations on which plants and flowers to cultivate in your garden immediately to enjoy some colour before the approaching cold and grey winter months.
“Don’t let the pots you used in summer sit empty until spring. Plant them up now for some autumnal colour,” Michael stated at the beginning of his TikTok video.
He went on to reveal which plants he has selected to incorporate into his own garden for winter.
The guru continued to write in the video’s caption: “What can I plant in pots in autumn? Don’t let the pots you used in summer sit empty until spring – plant them up now for some winter colour.”

While being filmed selecting various plants at the garden centre, he explained: “Violas, pansies, heathers, conifers, ivy and hardy tub plants will all look fantastic this time of year as our gardens die down and will continue to provide impact well into winter.”
Winter garden enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of blooming plants, including easy-to-grow options like pansies, primroses, and cyclamen, as well as fragrant and visually appealing shrubs such as witch hazel and camellia, according to Gardener’s World.
For a winter-blooming display, bulbs like snowdrops and crocus can be planted, while plants like winter jasmine offer bright, yellow flowers on bare branches.
“I personally love bold single tones like whites, reds, and greens, which will catch the eye in a pot, and will look equally fab in a hanging basket,” said Michael.
Some winter-flowering plants also serve as a boon for pollinators, offering pollen and nectar for species such as bumblebees, which are increasingly found foraging during the winter months.
These blooms can provide a vital lifeline for these unseasonably active pollinators, which otherwise would go hungry.
“And if you’re stymied by choice, you can always get a pre-made one. Nobody has to know,” he advised his viewers, as he was seen selecting a pre-made basket for his own garden.
The comments section quickly filled with responses, with many eager to give their gardens a second round of floral beauty.
“Ohhhh good excuse for me to go to the garden centre, thanks Michael,” one viewer commented. Another added: “Aww thanks for this cause my garden looks sad now all my flowers have died off x.”
