  1. Asparagus is not a fern, those are just lateral branches that emerge from the spear. Asparagus is in the same family as Agave, Yucca, and Hyacinth and is an angiosperm.

  2. A guy un my neighborhood has asparragus growing in the side walk and did no noticed until one day I almost walk over it and take a coser look AND said, wait a minute, why are asparragus here?

  3. Nothing like fresh asparagus. A well maintained patch will last 100 years. I often see asparagus ferns growing near a farm’s water canal indicating there was once a farm house on that location.

  4. We moved 3 years ago and the asparagus system where we are now is so massive i have my kids harvesting them and handing bags of it out at church just to get rid of it because we can only reasonably eat so much.

  5. I did it the hard way, from seed.

    This is year zero. The plants got a couple inches high, then stopped. I thought they'd died. Then for some reason they took off again last month. It's a weird plant, very unpredictable.

    I assume the next step is to let it die back, then prune it back to the crown, cover it in mulch, and leave it over winter, so it can start again in spring. Wash, rinse, repeat for a couple of years, then finally get a harvest.

  7. If we harvest tender enough that will be sweetest but doesn’t mean they are thin

  8. I feel your pain. I have planted it every year for 8 years. This is the first time it made it through the winter. My neighbor has "wild asparagus" growing along their fence. They never harvest it. They let me transplant some. The transplants died, they still have asparagus. 😂

  9. The same goes for hostas from the same family. Not only are they edible, they can also be grown in shadier areas like next to buildings and under trees. You can harvest the young shoots in the early spring, or you can harvest the mature greens and cook them back down until they're tender. They taste exactly like asparagus and can be used in many of the same recipes.

  10. Fresh asparagus tastes sweet like candy. Mine rarely makes it out of the garden. I eat those babies the minute I cut them.

  11. im so sorry can someone explain how asparagus tastes good to anyone 😭😭 it tastes like slimy dirt but idk if everyone taste it like that or if my tastebuds messed up

  12. I am on year two. Hopefully, I will get some good spears next year. I started from seed because I am cheap.

  13. Some research has indicated that harvesting the first year is okay. Of course, every year you must leave some spears to develop into branches for leaf development. Without leaves, no photosynthesis, so no food for the plant – not a good thing.
