CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Master Gardeners are accepting submissions for their annual Kids Art Contest, open to students in grades 1–6. This year’s theme is “Garden Discoveries – Vegetable or Edible Plant,” with entries due by Sept. 25. All entries must be dropped off at the Cullman County Extension Office.
“The Master Gardener Kids Art Contest is an opportunity for elementary-aged children to be creative and learn,” said Dr. Kira Sims, Cullman County Extension director. “Not only do they get to pick their favorite vegetable or edible plant to draw, but they must also find an interesting fact about it. This is a great way to teach children how to ‘research’ things they would like to know.”
Cash rewards and ribbons are up for grabs, with contestants competing for first, second and third place in each grade. Honorable mentions will also be recognized. Winning entries, along with other submissions, will be displayed at the Cullman County Fair.
A panel of Master Gardeners will oversee the judging of the entries, with a focus on neatness (grade level will be considered here), adherence to the provided rules and the accuracy of the facts submitted. Winners will be notified by phone or text about one week before the fair.
Dr. Sims encouraged students to pay close attention to the contest directions. “There are a lot of directions and rules–make sure you read them all so you know what and how to draw the item, when and where to turn it in, and who can participate,” she said. “The entries should be drawn on the page provided with the rules. We have the contest pages at our office if someone needs some. I would encourage kids to give it a try. Draw your favorite vegetable and learn something really cool about it!”
A full list of rules can be found at www.aces.edu/go/artcontest. All artwork and facts must be submitted on the official PDF accessible through the link.
