can you start a garden for just $20 well let’s head into this Garden Center and find out yeah we’re heading into Dollarama and trying to buy as much garden equipment as we can for $20 let’s see how we get on gardening is an amazing way to grow your own food but it can get pretty expensive between soil seeds tools and containers those costs they add up quick and not everyone has that budget for fancy raised bed so premium potting soil so that’s why we’re walking around this dollar Amo with 20 bucks avoiding the hats maybe we need a watering can though that is a nice watering can so today I’m putting that to the test we’re here in dollar ammo I’ve got 20 bucks in my hand and I’m going to try and start some seeds like these seeds which are cheap if these work they could be great this looks interesting as well I’m probably going to avoid the biod gradable pots the ones that are made from recycled paper I find they dry out too quick try some of these plastic pots I think so we’re back from dollar amama and um I got to say I am pretty impressed just spent over $17 and even though there weren’t the seeds that I really would have liked to have seen I feel like we’ve got a pretty good start here so I’ll show you some of the items that I got that I would say are probably a good investment if you’re just starting so I got a few packets of seeds and I was really impressed with the price when I first saw these 99 not even a dollar and then they were on a three for $1 deal so these are just about 34 cents a package and they look to be decent quality seeds they are McKenzie seeds um I buy the Branded ones but this must be some that they’ve just made for dollar uh now the selection wasn’t great it wasn’t great what was left but I want to do this and just see what we can get going going some of these I actually wouldn’t even start inside like the beans I’d probably just stick them in the ground but to test what we’ve picked up we will be starting them today also got some peas and some broccoli I said I wasn’t growing broccoli this year um if these take off then I probably will be growing broccoli this year and what really impressed me was the price of these seeds even at 9 these are a great deal uh I’m not sure of the quality that is one thing that I’m questioning especially as they’re three for $1 so who knows but we’ll test that as this goes on and I will mention the price again cuz 33 C I spend $7 on a packet of seed sometimes sometimes twice when my Reapers don’t take off but that’s okay I will run you through some of the equipment that I got today I got this kind of greenhouse pack it’s two trays and uh a dome so what I did with this I’m actually going to put the peas in here and just have peash shoots I feel like that’s a kind of a spring feeling that I need right now already put the uh drainage holes in so then I can just bottom water with that put the peas in and there we go pretty confident that that’s going to work I also picked up this Cedar tray I like it cuz it has all included drainage holes um you can bottom water with this it also has a dome and also I just checked if you’ve got not much space maybe you’ve just got a sunny window this will fit on the window sill I might do that although I do have cats so they might munch on the seeds as they’re growing as I have cat I figured you know this would be fun for a beginner Gardener this should be easy and if you’ve got cats why not it is catgrass an all-in-one pack so we’ll get that started today and treat my cats to some of the produce from my farm while I was in there I also did see a lot of these growing kits for stuff like strawberries picked up the lavender pack let’s see what’s actually in here yeah okay this will be interesting it just has a kind of a disc of soil um I guess that expands I’ll read the instructions and get that going really not sure how much fertility is going to be in there but uh we’ll try and get these going and even the soil I have bought from Dollarama this was 250 for 2 packs it is organic potting soil feels like maybe an expensive way to buy it uh I am using mainly bigger seeds here so I feel like this should work and here’s what we got we got a tray for the P seedlings that was $2.50 the lavender was $3.25 the catgrass kit which is a really good deal by the way cuz there’s two seed packets in there that was 275 and those seed packets are priced at$ 379 themselves the big green planter that was $4.50 the soil was 75 each I got two of those and the seeds cost me $1 taxes $187 in total we’re under that $20 budget I spent $17 37 to get this Garden going it’s been 2 weeks since we’re at Dollarama trying to start a garden for under 20 bucks and there are some things that I’m actually pretty impressed with at the moment anyway we’ll go through them one by one and some of these are doing really well others are doing not so well that’s kind of an error on both sides I would say we’ll start with the catgrass it works if you’ve got pets and you want to do catgrass go to dollar because it’s just a pretty good deal yeah dirt everywhere story of my life this next one I wasn’t expecting to see many results in 2 weeks it seems like it’s working it’s the grow your own lavender kit that had the puck of soil in the bottom that expanded to fill it all um and there is some signs of life in there but I’m going to keep this going I love having Lavender in the garden this next one cost me under3 um and I’m pretty impressed with it the seeds that were 33 cents each from Mackenzie seed but rebranded under Dollarama very good very good and this PE tray cost me less than three bucks in including the seeds I just put this in a window sill uh and you can just use it for for peas shoots just enjoy those pinch them off put them on a salad I wouldn’t really recommend growing peas like that anyway but for the experiment it works I’ve got peas shoots I’m happy just stick peas in the ground and they’ll grow no problem usually okay on to the next experiment in this and the tray in this one was probably the most expensive thing on my bill it was $4.50 and I have a couple issues with it now I just started these oh God there we go there’s the issue starting already I started these uh and just put them on a window sell and then I noticed they got laggy so I put them under the light most of the beans have come up there’s a few cells one two three four cells haven’t come up so if you are buying seeds from Dollarama just overseed but these look like oh God see this is the problem W with this fill it up with water uh and then cuz it’s cheap plastic it just bends this is probably only good for one season and that’s probably my biggest problem with this the broccoli seeds uh they have come up no problem if you’re looking to save money on Broccoli go to doll Dollarama and buy them I’m going to be planting some more I do a bit of gardening because I want to be a bit more eco-friendly so this really defeats the point of what I’m trying to do I would rather spend a couple dollars more and get something that I can reuse there’s a couple options I really enjoy I got these on Amazon they have the sales you put them in and the plastic is pretty tough I also have these These are silicone seed starting uh trays and reusable and hard to break and they’re not going to fold like that tray will I hate this tray oh my God this tray is going in the trash and that feels bad but it’s trash don’t buy this tray $450 not worth it I also got the uh potting soil from Dollar Amor as well 75s it just feels very Sandy it dries out really quick spend a little more and get a lot more uh this really isn’t worth it it’s very Sandy and I don’t rate it so in this experiment where we tried to start a garden for under 20 bucks at Dollarama we found that you can do it should you do it in some cases yeah in others no soil buy good quality stuff plastic trays spend a little more and get stronger ones if you want to grow peash shoots go for it especially when it’s still cold outside and there’s no chance of these going outside and you want some Greenery do it this this actually works really well for under three bucks I’m happy we started a garden for under 20 bucks by shopping at Dollarama thank you for checking out this video I hope you enjoyed it please remember like subscribe and comment I would love to see how you have your seed starting station set up.
Price ≠ quality .
I bought some west coast seeds and the germination rate is horrible. I rebought some seeds few days ago ( eggplant ) 10 seeds for 6.5! Never again, I'll stick to small local producers ..
