The Art of Gardening Club is preparing for the fair and its Brethren Care Civic Project.

The club is seeking volunteers for the fair. Helpers are needed to follow specimen and floral arrangement judges Sept. 13. Cathy Siwek and Faith McKinley will record scores and comments from judges. Dahlias, for instance, may be judged for symmetry, whereas sedums may be judged on the size of a bloom. Helpers will meet at the building between the office and Claremont Avenue.

The club will also participate in a Brethren Care Civic Project on Oct. 1. Members will carpool to Brethren Care to assist around 20 residents at Brookwood in making toilet paper pumpkins. Ruth Ann Linder oversees the project, with Siwek supplying the rolls of toilet tissue and Kathy Bargar furnishing three dozen cookies.

During its Sept. 3 meeting, the club shared a thank you letter and certificate from National Garden Cubs for its June Plant-A-Tree donation. It was also noted that the historical society is seeking Halloween volunteers. Freer Field, Freer Home and the historical society also need Christmas volunteers.

Following the meeting, members traveled to Willo’dell Nursery to browse the perennials that were on sale.

The Art of Gardening Club meets the first Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church.
