Seed Starting for Spring Garden in Zone 9b: A Beginner’s Guide

Get a head start on your spring garden in Zone 9b with this easy-to-follow seed starting guide!

It is January 2nd, 2025 and I am starting my Spring garden seeds today. I live in Zone 9b and 8 weeks from now our temperatures will likely be in high 70Fs or low 80Fs, so I want to get started. I am sowing flowers (Black Eyed Susan, Rose Moss, and three colors of Alyssum) and veggies (bell peppers, garlic chives, carrots, spinach, and purple basil).

In this video, we’ll cover:

👉 Choosing the right seeds: Learn which vegetables and flowers thrive in Zone 9b and select the best varieties for your spring garden.
👉 Preparing your seed starting mix: Discover the ideal soil composition. I use a commercial mix that is already sterilized
👉 Sowing seeds: Learn the best techniques for sowing seeds, including depth, spacing, and watering.
👉 Providing optimal light and heat: Understand the importance of light and heat for seedling growth and how to provide them effectively.
👉 Preventing common problems: Learn how to identify and prevent common seedling issues like damping off, overwatering, and nutrient deficiencies.

hey y’all welcome back to my channel so today is January 2nd so happy New Year to everybody uh so I want to go ahead and start my seeds uh a few seeds I want to start some uh some veggies and some uh flowers as well so I’ve already labeled what I’m going to start today so I want to start some uh garlic chives uh the giant spinach uh basil the purple basil uh petite carrots and also bell pepper so this uh I cooked with it I cooked with the Bell pepp a few days ago and I put it in a wet uh moist pepper towel and it’s to start sprouting so I’ll go ahead and start those so that’s a mix of all the varieties of bell pepper and then on the flowers I have uh a Lis some I have the purism the Gold Dust the cupet of snow the white one and then also Rose moss and for one perennial I’ll do the blacke Susan I’ve already cleaned out my seed starting station the lights are on the um the Growers already ready the containers are ready and I’ll be using this seed starting mix I haven’t used this one before it was just the one that I found in the store yesterday so I got that um and I’ll add some vermiculate at least for the for the carrots um so let’s go ahead and get started [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] okay um I’ve portioned out the seed T mix and now we can start um so we have three of these These are um 3x fours so 12 in that tray and the rectangular ones are 2 by five so 10 10 in these and I have six of those and three of these 12 uh 12 cell trays okay let’s start with the with the seats I’ll start with the bell pepper mix and this this has the green one the red one the orange one and the yellow one I don’t know what’s what so we’ll just put a bunch of them and see what [Music] grows and I’ll put two in each [Music] cell and hopefully with that we have at least one growing out of each cell so this is a lot of pepper um but let’s see what we will get out of [Music] it so they’ve already started sprouting so I’ll put the sprouted side down that’s the root I’m just hoping it’s a good mix and I don’t get more you know a lot of one one color I wanted all four [Music] so this is my mite [Music] so the vermiculite will help with a moisture retention and then for these I will water from the bottom add a little bit of water [Music] and that should feed it water through capillary action from the bottom coming up [Music] okay the bell pepper is done [Music] and now want to let’s do the spinach yes so for this one I want to for the spinach I want to put put the spinach and uh basil together cuz I only need six of each I don’t need that many um so I’ll only I’ll grow half half the tray will have spinach the other half will have uh the basil okay [Music] and like I say today is January 2nd so it might seem like it’s early to start seeds but for us uh 8 weeks from now is um we’ll probably already be in in at 80° so that’s why I’m starting them early I’m in zone uh 9B and our Winters are very mild if you can call them Winters so I want to go ahead and uh uh start them actually on time this year [Music] [Music] okay I’ll do the rest um of the seeds for the for the alysum and the Ros Moss uh those uh the seeds don’t need to be covered so I’ll just sprinkle them on top um I’ll I’ll come back and show you how I do that one uh but for the rest the rest of the seeds should be the same so I’ll go ahead and do the carrots I’ll do the the garlic chives and the black Susan and then when I get to the alysum and the Ros MOS I’ll I’ll come back okay we are down to the alysum so we have the the purple the gold dust and the coppet of uh copper of snow so with these they should uh the [Music] seeds need light to germinate so I will not cover them with a verite I will just just sprinkle them um on the on the cells and that should hopefully and then I’ll tum them down hopefully that should be enough for them to to germinate so let’s see this is the purple [Music] one see the seeds are very very small so I don’t even think my forceps will be able to catch them so I’ll just [Music] sprinkle hopefully they’re [Music] even you press them down so they make contact with the soil with the seed starting mix [Music] [Music] okay I’ll do the other two and that should finish our seed starting for today and then I’ll come back and show you how the setup looks like okay we are done the trays have been placed on the hitting mats so at the top here we have the we have the flowers so we have the blackeyed Susan Ross Moss uh there some purple a some gold and there some uh cupet of snow the white one and in the bottom shelf here the middle shelf we have the vegetables so that’s the chives the carrots the basil and the spinach and this is the bell pepper so uh today’s January AR 2nd uh we’ll keep an eye on them as they germinate hopefully they J we have a good germination uh rate um the heating uh the heating mats I think go to about 70 to 75 degrees I don’t think they go beyond 75 degrees um so that should be okay and then with the light um I’ll be using uh maybe 9 or 12 hour cycle so 12 hours on uh 12 hours off and then there also uh this cut is also by a window that’s the East the east side so the morning sun should be coming through this window although it’s not it’s not a lot of sun but it’s it should be it should be sufficient but okay yeah so this is what we have I’ll um I have my misting my misting um spray B right here I’ll make sure the the trays are the seedlings are um moist so hopefully we have a good uh we have good seedlings in a few weeks all right I’ll stop this video right here and thank you so much for watching I’ll uh and I’ll catch you all on the next one bye
