A year ago we started living on this old dairy farm. Since then we tried to help nature be planting trees and bushes, seed some native plants, digging a lime pond and mowed a few paths through the grass.

So it’s September, do I do nothing with the tall grass and sprinkle some seeds recovered from others or do I mowe it all down right about now?

The goal is to create a small forest and meadow.

Thanks.

If you want meadow you need to weaken the grass, which means mowing and taking away the cuttings, exposing the earth and planting wildflowers. Some of this can be by spreading seed now, or by plugs in spring.

Remember, even in the wild grass is grazed by animals and come winter will be grazed short in many places until they move on. You need to replicate this sort of behaviour.

So essentially it’s not NoMowMay but NoMowSummer?
