I wanted to share the updates I’ve made to the original box I posted a few days ago. I’ve add a lot more drainage holes and now it has spring loaded handles. Time to transfer my pre-bonsai sweet gum.

Wow nice work! Those handles look perfect. Maybe I’ll try some similar handles on my next builds

Looks great. The extra drainage will be super helpful for the tree. I cut the wood for my large grow box yesterday. Of course I forgot I planned to really upsize it. Hopefully the 36”x36”x14” is big enough. I have a tree (giant sequoia Loma Prieta) that needs to come out of the ground or will likely destroy my septic field.

I cut it back (topped) from 12 feet to 6 last year and it has grown back to 9 feet 🙂

Going to keep as much root as will fit in the box. (Hopefully) worst case I will have to make it taller, that’s easy enough. Otherwise it’ll be: start over and do a quick 4×4 build when I pull it out.

Show us what you put in it when the time comes

This looks awesome!!! It’s very satisfying to give our trees the optimal homes for achieving our goals. I am curious about the comments on holes/drainage. At some point you have to ask yourself how often do you really want to be watering the tree?

I would think you could compensate for the ideal drainage just by adjusting your soil mix without going to the extent of drilling the extra drainage holes and screening the bottom. Unless you are already planning to grow the tree with >1/4 inch size pure aggregate and wanting to crank up the drainage even harder beyond that in which case even a box this large will require so much regular watering it pushes the boundary of sustainable.

For example if you’re gonna grow the tree in a normal 1:1:1 APL mix and you want to use the wooden box with a few centimeters spacing between the slats and then you are hearing that you need more drainage for your box can’t you just go with a 0.5:1:1 mix or just go with a pure pumice mix; and if you need even more drainage go with a pure pumice mix with a larger particle size or go for a pure lava mix which holds even less water than pumice?

Anyways this is just something to consider; that is definitely a sweet grow box

Looks nice! You will probably have to toss it in a few years as the wood breaks down, so don’t get too attached.
