Hello all! I wonder if you can help. I bought a house this summer and the house survey report said the water butt kit had been installed incorrectly. I’ve never installed one before and it was only today when there was a huge downpour that resulted in water spilling over the gutter that I thought maybe it was installed incorrectly.

Can anyone determine if I need to fix the installation?

The outlet in the down pipe needs to be lowered. It should be at the same level as where in inlet pipe on the butt enters.

Not sure if this will fix the overflowing gutter though.

You might find the waterbutt outlet has caused blockage up the downpipe. Pull it all apart and see what comes out.

It might be the photo, but that looks like it’s been installed upside down.

Also it could just be your gutters need cleaning as I don’t know why the wrong installation of the kit on down pipe would do that, unless there is something blocking that down pipe at the point of the water but kit and that is what surveyor was on about?

Others have already said it’s too high. You’ve probably also got a blockage and need your gutters cleaning. If you intend to raise the butts, remember their weight when full is 110kg. I’d use paving slabs rather than wood but just be aware.

From this photo it looks perfectly installed. It’s not upside down (drains from lower half of insert) and runs slightly down starting at the top of the butt to the inlet. Look at a manual for one of these kits and that’s what it will say.

The only issue is it is for square guttering, not round.

Water spilling out the gutter is a separate issue. Get someone in to clear and flush them once a year.

Water butt will have nothing to do with your gutters they are meters above. This looks fine it’s very similar to my set up which works perfectly.
