Welcome to September! While typically we don’t experience fall-like temps this early in the month, here we are. Because of the colder temps we’ve been seeing overnight, many people who have raised plants outside, think tomato, strawberry, flowers, etc., might be thinking about bringing them in out of the cold until we see warmer temps towards the middle of next week.
Three Nights Of Bringing Plants Inside
It started back in August when we saw lows that were threatening the mid to lower 50s, which saw my family haul in a few plants from outside, with the intention of keeping them around a little bit longer. The first night we hauled in the plants, which included some herbs, wildflowers, strawberry plants, and some house plants. We didn’t realize what else we had brought in until the early morning hours.

On the first night, we brought the plants inside, and we inadvertently also welcomed in a frog. We wouldn’t have known that we had an unexpected guest if it weren’t for our pets playing with the trapped amphibian at 3am.
Lucky for the frog, he wasn’t too injured from this playdate with our cat, so he was scooped up and dropped off in the area he most likely came from. Last night we brought the plants back in with the lows being in the upper to mid 30s.

Again, after hauling in the plants from our patio, we were greeted this time by a grasshopper and a bee. The grasshopper was relocated safely outside; the bee, on the other hand, is somewhere inside.
What To Look For When Bringing Plants Inside
The first thing you should be checking for is hitchhikers like frogs, grasshoppers, and bees. Gently turn over leaves to look at the underside half, check the planters or pots they are in for other creatures or bugs before you bring them in.
Another thing you should do is check that pot or planter for any weeds; this is a great time to pick them out.
Another thing you should think about before bringing your plants inside is treating them with a soil-based or natural pesticide/insecticide, and administering that a few days before the cool down, in order to keep the bugs and insects out of your home.
Bringing in the pots and planters gives you a good reason to clean them or check them over for damage or other issues. Many garden centers are seasonal, so if they are still open, you could score a deal on new pots/planters at the end of the season.
Warm Weather Is Coming Back
The warmer weather is on its way back, by the middle of next week, we are supposed to be back where we should be in the low to mid 70s for highs, and lows in the mid to low 50s.
Very comfortable by many Minnesotans’ standards.
