So, I'm a bit of newbie lawn-caretaker for my parents and I'm wondering if I'm over edging the lawn. There does seem to be a bit of a small trench like area between the lawn and side walk. This good? Or no? 😅

I think it looks good. There are people/companies in my city that go overboard and are 2-4” from every piece of cement. Could park your scooter in the edge

Looks great to me! My string trimmer edging is on par with this. I edge every other week.

Proper edging. Having that kerf makes it easier to maintain in my opinion.

I think it’s definitely possible but you’re not there yet

It might take one or two times to straighten it out, but this is better than letting it grow on the sidewalk

In the winter, the rest of my lawn goes dormant and the edge still grows because the sun reflects off the concrete

Once had a lady accuse me of this because her concrete driveway on a steep hill had settle and cracked. She tried to blame weedeating lmao, I refused to work for her ever again i don’t have time for crazy.

I edge everytime I mow takes only a few minutes to stay on top of it and looks so much cleaner!

No sir, that looks perfect. I did my yard today, and I actually go a little further than that so grass doesn’t grow close to the sidewalk and onto the sidewalk.

Also I dont have to do it again in 2 months 😂😁

My neighbor just edged my lawn for me. It hasn’t been done for 20 years. I bought the house in 2021 and have been renovating etc and don’t have an edger. It made a huge difference!

Mine is a solid inch away from the walk. As fast as my grass grows in spring/summer, it looks as if it hasn’t been edged at all in 3 days unless I use 1”

Using an actual edger rather than a string trimmer is overedging in my mind.

Why create a channel for weed seeds to wash up into?

If it was grass like what I got growing in my backyard, that’s nowhere near enough edging

This is not that bad. I’ve seen way worse where the dirt extends 1-2 inches from the sidewalk

It’s OK for a guy your age, but when you hit 70 it should look like a bowling lane gutter

  15. kingcachis

Definitely possible. I’ve seen some people go so hard on the edge you could roll or break an ankle because it’s so deep and wide.

Not a fan of this kind of edging at all. It’s a hack and looks like one imo. Yeah it’s almost impossible to maintain a proper edge all the time but at least it looks good for some time when freshly cut. Also these slots can cause drainage issues where you kind of flood the pavement’s foundation with water.

Looks good. I did a 10x worse job on mine. Mind you, when I bought the house, 3 inches on each side of the sidewalk were overgrown.

    Great job!

Looks like a “Marine” hair cut 😉, but it looks better with it

  19. Happens to me when I use The Milwaukee trimmer to edge. Too powerful to handle and it goes outta line when hitting thick grass

Nope, and it’ll be filled in after a couple of weeks anyway. I do my edges monthly

  21. QuadRuledPad

Omg yes. It’s edging, not trenching. My two cents – trim flush to the sidewalk, don’t trench around it.

This looks nice, probably the max I’d go. I’m sure my neighbor started out this way. Now he’s at almost 4″ and you get to see a strip of dried out red clay. To each their own though

  23. polterjacket

Looks good. Bear in mind that a fresh edge can sometimes dry or contract a bit in summer heat and appear a bit more pronounced than it did when you first edged it.

i over edged for three days, blew the biggest wad ever

Personally, I edge with a string trimmer next to concrete and my line is on top of the concrete just barely. I don’t like to give a gap where weeds can get a foothold.

I think that it is a matter of choice. Some people like a more subtle edge, and some like a larger edge.

    It’s alright, it happens…
It’s grass, it will grow again
